“Moreover” in Chinese 1 – bìngqiě

Grammar Point:
並并且 bìngqiě can be used to connect two verbs. In this structure the two verbs may be of equal importance, but it emphasizes the progression of ideas and adds a layer of “moreover” or “furthermore” to the sentence.

Structure

Verb Phrase + 並并且 + Verb Phrase

When 並并且 bìngqiě is used to link verb phrases and without 也 yě or 還还 hái in the second phrase, it is possible to drop 且 qiě to create a more concise sentence.

多duō喝酒hējiǔ並且bìngqiě少shǎo睡覺shuìjiào， 你nǐ就jiù會huì很hěn快kuài去qù另lìng一個yíge世界shìjiè多duō喝酒hējiǔ并且bìngqiě少shǎo睡觉shuìjiào， 你nǐ就jiù会huì很hěn快kuài去qù另lìng一个yíge世界shìjiè
Drink more alcohol and sleep less, and you will quickly go to another world.

In Taiwan, there’s a superstition about not celebrating birthdays on years ending with nine. One well-known example is the taboo related to ages ending in nine, such as 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, and so on. These are considered “years ending with nine.” It’s believed that celebrating birthdays on these years is inauspicious due to the association of the number nine with potential disasters or illnesses. 不但 + Sentence + 並并且 + 也 or 還还 + Sentence

不但 búdàn can be replaced by 不僅 bùjǐn without changing any meaning. Both of them are formal expressions.
