此外 cǐwài — “Moreover” 2

此外 cǐwài means “in addition” or “moreover” — it introduces extra information that’s related to the topic, but not as tightly bound to it as 并且 bìngqiě would be.

Think of 此外 cǐwài as tacking on a related but separate point — often used to introduce one more fact, benefit, or detail after the main statement.

1 Statement 1 + 此外 cǐwài + Statement 2

他tā很hěn聪明cōngming，此外cǐwài他tā还hái很hěn努力nǔlì
He is very smart, and moreover, he is very hardworking.
我们wǒmen公司gōngsī提供tígōng免费miǎnfèi午餐wǔcān，此外cǐwài还有háiyǒu健身房jiànshēnfáng可以kěyǐ使用shǐyòng
Our company provides free lunch, and in addition, there’s a gym available for use.
Culture Note

Taiwanese companies don’t typically have a custom of providing lunch. Many people bring their own 便当 biàndāng (lunch box) from home, or the office will order 便当 biàndāng and drinks together at midday.

他tā很会hěnhuì画画huàhuà，此外cǐwài还hái精通jīngtōng音乐yīnyuè和hé舞蹈wǔdǎo
He is very good at painting, and besides, he’s also proficient in music and dance.

2 Casual Way to Say It

此外 cǐwài is more formal and mostly shows up in writing, while 除此之外 chúcǐzhīwài is a touch less formal and works in both written and spoken language.

这部zhèbù手机shǒujī功能gōngnéng很hěn强大qiángdà，除此之外chúcǐzhīwài设计shèjì也yě很hěn时尚shíshàng
This phone has powerful features, and moreover, the design is stylish too.
我wǒ每天měitiān晚上wǎnshàng都dōu花huā一些yìxiē时间shíjiān学习xuéxí中文zhōngwén。除此之外chúcǐzhīwài，我wǒ还hái喜欢xǐhuan看kàn中文zhōngwén电影diànyǐng来lái提高tígāo听力tīnglì

3 并且 bìngqiě vs 此外 cǐwài

此外 cǐwài introduces extra information that’s related to the main point but not tightly connected to it — it links two separate statements. 并且 bìngqiě connects two closely related actions or statements, often sequential or similar in nature, and can link two verb phrases as well as two statements.

我wǒ同意tóngyì并bìng支持zhīchí你nǐ
I agree with and support you. (此外 ❌ — 此外 can’t link two verb phrases like this)
他tā以前yǐqián住过zhùguò中国Zhōngguó并且bìngqiě还hái在zài那nà结过jiéguò一次yícì婚hūn
He has lived in China before, and even got married there once. (此外 ❌ — the second clause follows too directly from the first for 此外)
Quick Way to Remember

If the second point feels like a tangent — worth mentioning, but a step removed from the first — reach for 此外 cǐwài. If it feels like a direct continuation of the same thought, reach for 并且 bìngqiě.
