并且 bìngqiě — “Moreover”

并且 bìngqiě connects two ideas of roughly equal weight — verb phrases, adjectives, or whole sentences — adding a layer of “moreover” or “furthermore” to the sentence.

並且 bìngqiě moreover Chinese grammar

并且 bìngqiě can connect three kinds of things: 1. two verb phrases, 2. two adjectives, or 3. two complete sentences. Whichever it links, it carries a sense of building on what came before — not just “and,” but “and what’s more.”

1 Structure

Verb Phrase + 并且 bìngqiě + Verb Phrase

When 并且 bìngqiě links verb phrases and the second phrase doesn’t contain 也 yě or 还 hái, it’s possible to drop 且 qiě to create a more concise sentence, leaving just 并 bìng.

多duō喝酒hējiǔ并且bìngqiě少shǎo睡觉shuìjiào，你nǐ就jiù会huì很快hěnkuài去qù另一个lìng yíge世界shìjiè
Drink more alcohol and sleep less, and you’ll quickly be off to another world.
她tā努力nǔlì工作gōngzuò并bìng积极jījí学习xuéxí
She works hard, and studies proactively too.
我wǒ同意tóngyì并bìng支持zhīchí你nǐ
I agree with you, and support you too.

Tip

If you’re writing a formal essay or giving a presentation, use 并且 bìngqiě to sound more professional.

Verb Phrase + 并且 bìngqiě + 也 yě / 还 hái + Verb Phrase

Adding 也 yě or 还 hái before the second verb phrase strengthens the “moreover” feeling — here, 且 qiě can’t be dropped.

这家zhèjiā餐厅cāntīng提供的tígōng de食物shíwù好吃hǎochī，并且bìngqiě环境huánjìng也yě舒适shūshì
The food this restaurant serves is delicious, and the environment is also comfortable.
他tā以前yǐqián住过zhùguò中国Zhōngguó并且bìngqiě还hái在zài那nà结过jiéguò一次yícì婚hūn
He used to live in China, and even got married there once.

In Taiwan, there’s a superstition about not celebrating birthdays on ages ending in nine — 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, and so on. These are called “years ending with nine,” and it’s believed that openly celebrating a birthday in one of these years invites bad luck, illness, or disaster. The belief has been passed down through generations, so birthdays that fall on these ages traditionally go uncelebrated. 🎂🤫

不但 búdàn + Sentence + 并且 bìngqiě + 也 yě / 还 hái + Sentence

不但 búdàn can be replaced with 不仅 bùjǐn without changing the meaning — both are formal expressions for “not only.”

我的wǒde狗gǒu不但búdàn怕pà打雷声dǎléishēng，并且bìngqiě对duì鞭炮声biānpàoshēng也yě充满chōngmǎn恐惧kǒngjù
My dog is not only afraid of thunder, but also filled with fear of firecracker sounds.
他tā不仅bùjǐn成绩chéngjì好hǎo长得zhǎng de帅shuài，并且bìngqiě还有háiyǒu很hěn硬的yìng de家庭jiātíng背景bèijǐng
He not only has good grades and looks handsome, but also has a very strong family background.

并且 bìngqiě Isn’t Just for Verb Phrases

Unlike its shorter cousin 并 bìng, which only links verb phrases, 并且 bìngqiě is more flexible — it can also connect two adjectives, or two complete sentences.

她tā很hěn聪明cōngmíng并且bìngqiě很hěn努力nǔlì
She is smart and hardworking. (linking two adjectives)
这zhè房子fángzi很hěn贵guì，并且bìngqiě离lí公司gōngsī很hěn远yuǎn
This house is expensive, and it’s also far from the office. (linking two complete sentences)
Quick Way to Remember

并且 bìngqiě is the safer default — it covers verb phrases, adjectives, and sentences all in one. Save the shorter 并 bìng for when you’re specifically linking two verb phrases and want something more concise.

2 What’s the Difference?

并且 bìngqiě and 而且 érqiě both translate as “moreover,” but they sit at different levels of formality.
