“And” in Chinese 3 — 与 yǔ, 以及 yǐjí & 并 bìng

与 yǔ, 以及 yǐjí and 并 bìng all translate as “and” in formal, written Chinese. They link different building blocks: 与 yǔ and 以及 yǐjí join nouns and noun phrases, while 并 bìng joins verb phrases.

與 yǔ, 以及 yǐjí and 並 bìng in Chinese

None of these is the casual “and” you’d use with friends (that’s 和 hé or 跟 gēn). Think of them as the “and” you’d reach for in a report, an email, or a formal announcement.

1Structure

Noun + 与 yǔ + Noun

与 yǔ is the formal, written version of 和 hé / 跟 gēn. You’ll see it in book and movie titles, headlines, signs, and formal speeches. Like 跟 gēn, it can also mean “with,” as in 与……有关 yǔ… yǒuguān (“related to”) and 与……合作 yǔ… hézuò (“work together with”).

《老人lǎorén与yǔ海hǎi》是shì一yì本běn很hěn有名yǒumíng的de小说xiǎoshuō
The Old Man and the Sea is a very famous novel.
健康jiànkāng与yǔ快乐kuàilè比bǐ钱qián更gèng重要zhòngyào
Health and happiness matter more than money.
这zhè个ge问题wèntí与yǔ我们wǒmen的de工作gōngzuò没有méiyǒu关系guānxi
This issue has nothing to do with our work.
我们wǒmen很hěn高兴gāoxìng能néng与yǔ贵guì公司gōngsī合作hézuò

💡 Spot it in titles

Titles love 与 yǔ because it’s short and elegant. A lot of famous English titles with “and” are translated this way:

《美女měinǚ与yǔ野兽yěshòu》
Beauty and the Beast
《傲慢àomàn与yǔ偏见piānjiàn》
Pride and Prejudice

Noun Phrase + 以及 yǐjí + Noun Phrase

A formal way to say “and,” typically used in writing or formal speech to connect two or more noun phrases. In a list, it usually comes before the last item. You can also drop 以 yǐ, leaving just 及 jí.

我wǒ可能kěnéng先xiān到dào上海Shànghǎi，接着jiēzhe我wǒ可能kěnéng会huì去qù参观cānguān广州Guǎngzhōu以及yǐjí深圳Shēnzhèn
I might start in Shanghai, then visit Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
这zhè次cì的de意外yìwài让ràng老师lǎoshī以及yǐjí另外lìngwài三名sānmíng学生xuésheng都dōu受伤shòushāng了le
The accident injured the teacher and three other students.

📌 Tip

The shortened 及 jí shows up constantly on signs, notices, and official documents. Spot it and you’ll know a formal “and” is at play.

Verb Phrase + 并 bìng + Verb Phrase

Also used in formal contexts and written language, but to connect two verb phrases. It can be extended to 并且 bìngqiě without changing the meaning.

我wǒ同意tóngyì并bìng支持zhīchí你nǐ的de决定juédìng
I agree with and support your decision.
她tā精通jīngtōng中英文zhōngyīngwén并bìng拥有yōngyǒu10shí年nián以上yǐshàng的de教学jiàoxué经验jīngyàn
She is fluent in both Chinese and English, and has over 10 years of teaching experience.
我们wǒmen会huì尽快jǐnkuài去qù了解liǎojiě问题wèntí的de原因yuányīn并bìng给gěi你们nǐmen一yí个ge满意mǎnyì的de答复dáfù
We’ll look into the cause of the issue as soon as possible, and give you a satisfactory answer.
来信láixìn请qǐng附上fùshàng您nín的de简历jiǎnlì并bìng注明zhùmíng要yào申请shēnqǐng的de职位zhíwèi
Please attach your résumé to your email, and specify which position you’re applying for.
吃chī了le这zhè个ge药yào后hòu，你nǐ就jiù不bú会huì分心fēnxīn并且bìngqiě可以kěyǐ有yǒu很hěn高gāo的de专注力zhuānzhùlì
After taking this medicine, you won’t get distracted, and you’ll be able to stay highly focused.
Here extended to 并且 bìngqiě.
如果rúguǒ你nǐ对duì我wǒ好hǎo，我wǒ会huì感谢gǎnxiè你nǐ并且bìngqiě一辈子yíbèizi都dōu记得jìde
If you’re good to me, I’ll be grateful to you, and remember it for the rest of my life.
Here extended to 并且 bìngqiě.

2What’s the Difference?

All three are formal, but they attach to different parts of the sentence.
