“And” in Chinese – 以及 yǐjí & 并 bìng

以及 yǐjí & 并 bìng — “And”

Both 以及 yǐjí and 并 bìng translate as “and” in formal, written Chinese — but they link different building blocks: 以及 yǐjí joins noun phrases, while 并 bìng joins verb phrases.

Neither of these is the casual “and” you’d use with friends — think of them as the “and” you’d reach for in a report, an email, or a formal announcement.

1 Structure

Noun Phrase + 以及 yǐjí + Noun Phrase

A more formal way to say “and,” typically used in writing or formal speech to connect two or more noun phrases. It’s also possible to drop 以 yǐ, leaving just 及 jí.

我wǒ可能kěnéng先xiān到dào上海Shànghǎi，接着jiēzhe我wǒ可能kěnéng会huì去qù参观cānguān广州Guǎngzhōu以及yǐjí深圳Shēnzhèn
I might start in Shanghai, then visit Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
这次的zhècì de意外yìwài让ràng老师lǎoshī以及yǐjí另外lìngwài三名sānmíng学生xuésheng都dōu受伤了shòushāng le
The accident injured the teacher and three other students.

Tip

The shortened 及 jí shows up constantly in signs, notices, and official documents — spot it and you’ll know a formal “and” is at play.

Verb Phrase + 并 bìng + Verb Phrase

Also used in formal contexts and written language to connect two verb phrases. It can be extended to 并且 bìngqiě without changing the meaning.

我wǒ同意tóngyì并bìng支持zhīchí你的nǐde决定juédìng
I agree with and support your decision.
她tā精通jīngtōng中zhōng英文yīngwén并bìng拥有yōngyǒu10年shí nián以上的yǐshàng de教学jiàoxué经验jīngyàn
She is fluent in both Chinese and English, and has over 10 years of teaching experience.
我们wǒmen会huì尽快jǐnkuài去qù了解liǎojiě问题的wèntí de原因yuányīn并bìng给gěi你们nǐmen一个yíge满意的mǎnyì de答复dáfù
We’ll look into the cause of the issue as soon as possible, and give you a satisfactory answer.
来信láixìn请qǐng附上fùshàng您的nínde履历表lǚlìbiǎo并bìng注明zhùmíng要yào申请的shēnqǐng de职位zhíwèi
Please attach your résumé to your email, and specify which position you’re applying for.

After taking this medicine, you won’t be distracted, and can stay highly focused. (here extended to 並且)

If you’re good to me, I’ll be grateful to you, and remember it for the rest of my life. (here extended to 並且)

2 What’s the Difference?

Both are formal, but they attach to different parts of the sentence.
