“The Mouse Marries His Daughter” is a story for HSK3+ learners. Stories I shared some are Chinese folk tales, and some are my creations.
According to an old Chinese legend, mice from all over the world get together on the third night of Chinese New Year to celebrate a very special wedding – it’s the night when the Mouse marries off his daughter! People traditionally head to bed early that night to avoid disturbing the mice’s big celebration, as folklore warns that unhappy mice might nibble through your clothes or get into your food. It’s a charming tradition that’s still followed by many Chinese families today.

The Mouse Marries His Daughter English Translation
Once upon a time, there was a village filled with mice. The mice lived happily every day—except when the big, bad cat came around.
In this village, a mouse father was worried about finding the best husband for his daughter. He wanted to find the strongest being in the world, someone who could protect her and keep her safe from the bad cat.
The mouse father thought for a long time. Then, he looked up and saw the sun. “Oh! Why didn’t I think of this? The sun must be the strongest in the world!” So, he climbed up the mountain to find the sun. When he met the sun, he asked, “Oh sun, are you the strongest in the world? If you are, will you marry my daughter?”
The sun laughed and said, “Of course, I am the strongest!” But before he could finish speaking, a cloud floated by and covered the sun. Seeing this, the mouse father realized that the sun was not the strongest—the cloud was! So, he asked the cloud, “Will you marry my daughter?”
