“The Mouse Marries His Daughter” is a story for HSK3+ learners. Stories I shared some are Chinese folk tales, and some are my creations.

According to an old Chinese legend, mice from all over the world get together on the third night of Chinese New Year to celebrate a very special wedding – it’s the night when the Mouse marries off his daughter! People traditionally head to bed early that night to avoid disturbing the mice’s big celebration, as folklore warns that unhappy mice might nibble through your clothes or get into your food. It’s a charming tradition that’s still followed by many Chinese families today.

The Mouse Marries His Daughter English Translation

Just as the cloud was about to agree, the wind came and blew it away. The mouse father was surprised and thought, “Ah, the wind must be the strongest!” He then asked the wind, “Will you come home with me and marry my daughter?”

The wind said, “Of course! I’ll blow you home right now!” But as the wind blew, it carried the mouse father all the way to a wall—and suddenly, it couldn’t move him any further. The mouse father was shocked. “So, the wall is the strongest?” He asked the wall, “Are you the strongest in the world?”

The wall blushed and said, “I am strong, but I’m afraid of one thing—mice like you.”

At that moment, the mouse father realized something amazing. The strongest beings in the world were not the sun, the cloud, the wind, or the wall—it was the mice themselves!

This is a well-known Taiwanese folktale called “The Mouse Marries His Daughter.” In Taiwan, people believe that the third day of the Lunar New Year is the day when mice get married. So on that night, everyone should go to bed early and not disturb the mice’s wedding!

OneDotDot Chinese

Whenever I ask foreigners, "Do you speak Chinese?" they often reply, "a little bit" (yì diǎn diǎn). That inspired me to create this website and translate "yì diǎn diǎn" into the quirky and fun "One Dot Dot."

It’s also a reminder that learning Chinese is a journey, and progress happens one step at a time. By learning just a little bit every day, you’ll go far!
