“Pedestrian Hell” stills an issue in Taiwan.

FYI
“Pedestrian Hell” (in Chinese: 行人地獄狱 xíngrén dìyù; translated to English as “Living hell for pedestrians”) refers to a problem on Taiwan’s roads. It happens when cars don’t stop for people crossing the road, roads aren’t designed well for walking, and pedestrians’ rights aren’t respected. All of this makes walking around a real headache. Since the middle of 2022, Taiwan has had accidents where pedestrians were hit by cars on crosswalks because the cars didn’t stop. Many people agree with this term, and it’s been talked about by news from different countries. So now, it’s a way to sum up how walking on Taiwan’s roads can be a total nightmare.

還还 hái vs 仍然 réngrán

Both 還还 hái and 仍然 réngrán can be translated as “still” in English. However, they carry slightly different nuances.

還还 hái can mean “still” in the sense of “yet” or “not yet.” It’s often used to indicate that a situation hasn’t changed up to a certain point in time. It’s more commonly used in questions or negative statements.

On the other hand, 仍然 réngrán emphasizes the continuation of a situation, quality, or state that hasn’t changed despite expectations or circumstances. It’s often used to describe a consistent condition that remains over time. It’s also less colloquial than 還还 hái.

OneDotDot Chinese

Whenever I ask foreigners, "Do you speak Chinese?" they often reply, "a little bit" (yì diǎn diǎn). That inspired me to create this website and translate "yì diǎn diǎn" into the quirky and fun "One Dot Dot."

It’s also a reminder that learning Chinese is a journey, and progress happens one step at a time. By learning just a little bit every day, you’ll go far!
