才 cái: Only & Later Than Expected

才 cái shows that something is less than expected (“only”) or happens later than expected (“not until”). Either way, it often carries the speaker’s surprise or dissatisfaction.

一 Only: 才 + V + O

Subject + 才 + Verb + Object

才 cái before the verb means the amount is smaller than expected, often not enough.

你nǐ去qù超市chāoshì去qù了le两liǎng个ge小时xiǎoshí，你nǐ才cái买mǎi了le一yì瓶píng水shuǐ吗ma？

You were at the supermarket for two hours and only bought one bottle of water?

他tā住zhù在zài中国Zhōngguó十shí年nián了le，怎么zěnme才cái会huì说shuō三sān句jù中文Zhōngwén？

He’s lived in China for ten years. How can he only speak three sentences of Chinese?

今天jīntiān一整天yìzhěngtiān你nǐ才cái吃chī了le一yí个ge小xiǎo面包miànbāo，你nǐ在zài减肥jiǎnféi吗ma？

You only ate one little bread roll all day today. Are you on a diet?

他tā才cái学xué中文Zhōngwén两liǎng个ge月yuè就jiù打算dǎsuàn考kǎoHSK5，不是búshì天才tiāncái就是jiùshì白痴báichī

He’s only studied Chinese for two months and he’s planning to take HSK 5. He’s either a genius or an idiot.

他tā才cái来lái台湾Táiwān两liǎng个ge星期xīngqī，所以suǒyǐ很hěn多duō事shì都dōu还hái不bù习惯xíguàn

He’s only been in Taiwan for two weeks, so he’s still not used to a lot of things.

我wǒ才cái说shuō错cuò一yí次cì话huà，你nǐ要yào记仇jìchóu多久duōjiǔ！

I said the wrong thing just once. How long are you going to hold a grudge?!

二 Only: 才 + Number

才 + Number + Measure Word + Noun

才 cái can also go right before a number: “only 30 years old,” “only 15 followers.”

你nǐ才cái三十sānshí岁suì啊a！我wǒ一直yìzhí记得jìde你nǐ说shuō你nǐ四十sìshí！

You’re only 30? I always remembered you saying you were 40!

你nǐ的de工资gōngzī才cái一千yìqiān块kuài美金měijīn！这样zhèyàng够gòu用yòng吗ma？

Your salary is only 1,000 US dollars? Is that enough to live on?

才cái八bā颗kē鸡蛋jīdàn，竟然jìngrán要yào五wǔ块kuài美金měijīn，太tài坑人kēngrén了le！

Only eight eggs, and they cost five dollars? What a rip-off!

才cái十五shíwǔ个ge人rén追踪zhuīzōng你nǐ，你nǐ的deYouTube频道píndào可能kěnéng要yào调整tiáozhěng方向fāngxiàng了le

Only 15 people follow you? Maybe your YouTube channel needs a new direction.

FYI: 坑人 kēngrén坑人 kēngrén is slang for being ripped off or taken advantage of. If something costs way too much or turns out to be poor quality, you can say 这zhè也yě太tài坑人kēngrén了le吧ba！ “That’s such a rip-off!”

三 Later Than Expected: Time + 才 + V

Subject + Time + 才 + Verb

After a time word, 才 cái means something happens later than expected: “not until.” Notice there’s no 了 at the end, even for past events.

不好意思bùhǎoyìsi，你们nǐmen先xiān吃chī吧ba！我wǒ大概dàgài八点bā diǎn才cái会huì到dào

Sorry, you guys go ahead and eat! I probably won’t get there until around eight.

他tā明年míngnián才cái会huì来lái台湾Táiwān

He won’t come to Taiwan until next year.

现在xiànzài客人kèrén比较bǐjiào多duō，餐点cāndiǎn要yào三十sānshí分钟fēnzhōng才cái会huì好hǎo

We’re busy right now, so your food will take 30 minutes.

你nǐ怎么zěnme二十八èrshíbā岁suì才cái从cóng大学dàxué毕业bìyè？

How come you didn’t graduate from college until 28?

Most people finish college at 22 to 24, so 28 is later than expected.

为什么wèishénme现在xiànzài才cái告诉gàosu我wǒ今天jīntiān是shì你nǐ生日shēngrì？

Why are you only telling me now that today’s your birthday?

我wǒ昨天zuótiān赶gǎn报告bàogào，一直yìzhí到dào半夜bànyè三点sān diǎn才cái睡shuì

I was rushing to finish a report yesterday and didn’t go to bed until 3 a.m.

If everyone already knows the time, it can be left out:

你nǐ才cái来lái！电影diànyǐng都dōu开始kāishǐ了le！

You’re only getting here now? The movie’s already started!

你nǐ怎么zěnme才cái说shuō？大家dàjiā刚刚gānggāng问wèn你nǐ的时候de shíhou干吗gànmá不bù说shuō？

Why are you only saying this now? Why didn’t you say anything when everyone asked you just now?

四才 vs. 就

才 cái and 就 jiù are opposites after a time word: 就 jiù means earlier or faster than expected, 才 cái means later or slower.

就 · earlier than expected

他tā六点liù diǎn就jiù起床qǐchuáng了le

He got up at six. (So early!)

才 · later than expected

他tā十一点shíyī diǎn才cái起床qǐchuáng

He didn’t get up until eleven. (So late!)

Notice that 就 jiù usually comes with 了 le at the end, but 才 cái does not.

五 Common Mistakes

❌ 他tā昨天zuótiān十一點shíyī diǎn十一点shíyī diǎn才cái起床qǐchuáng了le

✅ 他tā昨天zuótiān十一點shíyī diǎn十一点shíyī diǎn才cái起床qǐchuáng

Even for the past, don’t add 了 after 才 cái + verb.

❌ 你nǐ才cái三十sānshí歲suì岁suì了le

✅ 你nǐ才cái三十sānshí歲suì岁suì

才 cái + number means “only.” Adding 了 contradicts it.

❌ 我wǒ八點bā diǎn八点bā diǎn到dào才cái

✅ 我wǒ八點bā diǎn八点bā diǎn才cái到dào

才 cái goes before the verb.
