幸虧 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī — “Fortunately”

幸虧 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī introduces a lucky circumstance that narrowly averted a bad outcome — it needs a full clause, and is usually paired with 要不然/不然/要不 yàobùrán/bùrán/yàobù要不然/不然/要不 yàobùrán/bùrán/yàobù or 否則 fǒuzé否则 fǒuzé.

At this level it’s worth setting side by side with its two close cousins: 多虧 duōkuī多亏 duōkuī, which credits a specific person or factor, and 虧得 kuīde亏得 kuīde, a literary word with a split personality — it can mean the same sincere “fortunately,” or flip into biting sarcasm.

幸虧 xìngkuī Chinese Grammar

幸虧 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī is neutral and general — any stroke of luck qualifies. 多虧 duōkuī多亏 duōkuī narrows the credit to someone or something specific, and can attach to a bare noun or pronoun.

虧得 kuīde亏得 kuīde reads as the more literary register of both — until a stray 還 hái还 hái or 竟然 jìngrán竟然 jìngrán flips it into “fancy that,” a dry, reproachful jab.

1 Structure

幸虧 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī + Lucky Incident,要不然/不然/要不 yàobùrán/bùrán/yàobù要不然/不然/要不 yàobùrán/bùrán/yàobù + Negative Result

要不然 yàobùrán要不然 yàobùrán means “otherwise.” It can shrink to 要不 yàobù要不 yàobù (more written) or 不然 bùrán不然 bùrán (more spoken).

幸虧xìngkuī他tā當機立斷dāngjīlìduàn,及時jíshí撤離chèlí現場xiànchǎng,要不然yàobùrán後果hòuguǒ不堪設想bùkānshèxiǎng幸亏xìngkuī他tā当机立断dāngjīlìduàn,及时jíshí撤离chèlí现场xiànchǎng,要不然yàobùrán后果hòuguǒ不堪设想bùkānshèxiǎng
Fortunately he made a decisive call and evacuated the scene in time — otherwise the consequences would have been unthinkable.
Fortunately the company positioned itself in overseas markets early — otherwise it probably wouldn’t have survived this downturn.

幸虧 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī + Lucky Incident,否則 fǒuzé否则 fǒuzé + Negative Result

否則 fǒuzé否则 fǒuzé also means “otherwise,” but reads more formal and literary than 要不然 yàobùrán要不然 yàobùrán.

幸虧xìngkuī律師lǜshī及時jíshí提出tíchū關鍵guānjiàn證據zhèngjù,否則fǒuzé這場zhè chǎng官司guānsi恐怕kǒngpà就jiù輸定了shūdìngle幸亏xìngkuī律师lǜshī及时jíshí提出tíchū关键guānjiàn证据zhèngjù,否则fǒuzé这场zhè chǎng官司guānsi恐怕kǒngpà就jiù输定了shūdìngle
Fortunately the lawyer presented key evidence in time — otherwise this case would probably have been a sure loss.
幸虧xìngkuī氣象qìxiàng單位dānwèi提早tízǎo發布fābù警報jǐngbào,否則fǒuzé傷亡shāngwáng人數rénshù恐kǒng將jiāng大幅dàfú攀升pānshēng幸亏xìngkuī气象qìxiàng单位dānwèi提早tízǎo发布fābù警报jǐngbào,否则fǒuzé伤亡shāngwáng人数rénshù恐kǒng将jiāng大幅dàfú攀升pānshēng
Fortunately the weather bureau issued the warning early — otherwise the casualty count would likely have risen sharply.

虧得 kuīde亏得 kuīde — the word with two faces

As a literary stand-in for 幸虧 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī or 多虧 duōkuī多亏 duōkuī, 虧得 kuīde亏得 kuīde is sincere. But add a 還 hái还 hái or 竟然 jìngrán竟然 jìngrán, and the same word turns into dry sarcasm — “fancy that,” mocking someone for falling short of what their role or claim should guarantee.

虧得kuīde資深zīshēn工程師gōngchéngshī臨場línchǎng應變yìngbiàn,這條zhè tiáo產線chǎnxiàn才cái沒有méiyǒu停擺tíngbǎi亏得kuīde资深zīshēn工程师gōngchéngshī临场línchǎng应变yìngbiàn,这条zhè tiáo产线chǎnxiàn才cái没有méiyǒu停摆tíngbǎi
Fortunately the veteran engineer adapted on the spot — otherwise this production line would have ground to a halt.
Sincere — a literary synonym of 幸虧/多虧.
虧得kuīde警方jǐngfāng及時jíshí封鎖fēngsuǒ現場xiànchǎng,才cái沒有méiyǒu釀成niàngchéng更大gèngdà的de傷亡shāngwáng亏得kuīde警方jǐngfāng及时jíshí封锁fēngsuǒ现场xiànchǎng,才cái没有méiyǒu酿成niàngchéng更大gèngdà的de伤亡shāngwáng
Fortunately the police cordoned off the scene in time — otherwise there would have been even greater casualties.
Sincere — a literary synonym of 幸虧/多虧.
虧得kuīde你nǐ還hái好意思hǎoyìsi說shuō自己zìjǐ盡力了jìnlìle亏得kuīde你nǐ还hái好意思hǎoyìsi说shuō自己zìjǐ尽力了jìnlìle
Fancy that — you still have the nerve to say you tried your best.
Ironic — 還 signals reproach, not gratitude.
虧得kuīde你nǐ身為shēnwéi隊長duìzhǎng,卻què在zài關鍵guānjiàn時刻shíkè臨陣脫逃línzhèntuōtáo亏得kuīde你nǐ身为shēnwéi队长duìzhǎng,却què在zài关键guānjiàn时刻shíkè临阵脱逃línzhèntuōtáo
Fancy that — you’re the team captain, yet you fled at the critical moment.
Ironic — 卻 sets up the contrast between role and behaviour.
Bonus: 得虧 děikuī得亏 děikuī

A colloquial Northern Mandarin (Beijing-flavoured) variant of 虧得/幸虧 kuīde/xìngkuī亏得/幸亏 kuīde/xìngkuī, common in mainland spoken Chinese and TV dramas. It isn’t used in Taiwan Mandarin.

2 Common Mistakes

These three words look interchangeable — until structure or tone gets in the way.

❌
幸虧xìngkuī你nǐ,我wǒ才cái找到zhǎodào這份zhè fèn工作gōngzuò幸亏xìngkuī你nǐ,我wǒ才cái找到zhǎodào这份zhè fèn工作gōngzuò
✅
多虧duōkuī你nǐ,我wǒ才cái找到zhǎodào這份zhè fèn工作gōngzuò多亏duōkuī你nǐ,我wǒ才cái找到zhǎodào这份zhè fèn工作gōngzuò
幸虧/幸亏 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī must combine with a full clause describing the lucky situation — it can’t attach directly to a bare pronoun or noun the way 多虧/多亏 duōkuī多亏 duōkuī can.
❌
Without a marker like 還/竟然 hái/jìngrán还/竟然 hái/jìngrán to signal irony, 虧得 kuīde亏得 kuīde can default to sounding sarcastic in a compliment. For a sincere compliment, 多虧/幸虧 duōkuī/xìngkuī多亏/幸亏 duōkuī/xìngkuī avoids the ambiguity entirely.

3 幸虧 xìngkuī幸亏 xìngkuī vs 多虧 duōkuī多亏 duōkuī vs 虧得 kuīde亏得 kuīde
