Linking Two adjectives with 又 yòu

Grammar Point:
When you want to use more than two adjectives to describe one thing, you can use the 又 yòu structure. This structure is used to convey that something is “both… and…” in English. The two adjectives used in this construction should not contrast in feeling. In other words, they should either both be positive or both be negative.

Structure

S + 又 + Adj.1 + 又 + Adj.2

我wǒ學生xuéshēng說shuō中文zhōngwén又yòu難nán又yòu複雜fùzá我wǒ学生xuéshēng说shuō中文zhōngwén又yòu难nán又yòu复杂fùzá
My students said Chinese is difficult and complicated.

S + Adj.1 + 又 + Adj.2

When the first adjective is 2 syllable adjective, it is possible to drop the first 又 yòu in colloquial Chinese.

我wǒ覺得juéde那nà家jiā餐廳cāntīng好吃hǎochī又yòu便宜piányí我wǒ觉得juéde那nà家jiā餐馆cānguǎn好吃hǎochī又yòu便宜piányi
I think that restaurant is good and cheap.

Common Mistakes

(Do not place any adverb in front of the adjectives.)

This restaurant’s food is expensive and delicious.
(Two adjectives should either both be positive or both be negative.)
