The structure 不是 búshì… 就是 jiùshì… in English can be translated as “either… or…” or “if it’s not…, then it’s…” It emphasizes the limited options available, indicating that something is either one thing or another, without any other alternatives.

Pregnant women either crave spicy food or sour food.

FYI
In some parts of China, there’s a charming belief that a pregnant woman’s cravings might predict the baby’s gender. If she’s craving spicy foods, it’s thought she might be carrying a boy. But if she’s yearning for sour treats, the prediction is for a girl! However, it’s all in good fun and not scientifically proven. Cravings during pregnancy are more about personal preferences than predicting the baby’s gender. The real surprise comes when the baby arrives!

OneDotDot Chinese

Whenever I ask foreigners, "Do you speak Chinese?" they often reply, "a little bit" (yì diǎn diǎn). That inspired me to create this website and translate "yì diǎn diǎn" into the quirky and fun "One Dot Dot."

It’s also a reminder that learning Chinese is a journey, and progress happens one step at a time. By learning just a little bit every day, you’ll go far!
