Exactly 就是 jiùshì Grammar

Grammar Point:
As an adverb, 就 jiù can be placed before the predicate to add emphasis. “就是 jiùshì” is used to emphasize or confirm a statement. It can be translated into English as “exactly,” “indeed,” or “only because.”

Structure

就是 jiùshì + N/SV

A： 喂wéi？ 請qǐng找zhǎoTiffany A： 喂wéi？ 请qǐng找zhǎoTiffany
Hello? May I speak to Tiffany, please?
B： 我wǒ就是jiùshìB： 我wǒ就是jiùshì
This is Tiffany speaking.
(I am exactly the one you are looking for, not other else.)

這zhè就是jiùshì我wǒ說shuō的de餐廳cāntīng这zhè就是jiùshì我wǒ说shuō的de餐厅cāntīng
This is (exactly) the restaurant I was talking about.

我wǒ就是jiùshì經理jīnglǐ， 請問qǐngwèn有yǒu什麼shénme問題wèntí嗎ma？ 我wǒ就是jiùshì经理jīnglǐ， 请问qǐngwèn有yǒu什么shénme问题wèntí吗ma？

他tā就是jiùshì我wǒ以前yǐqián跟gēn你nǐ說shuō的de那個nàge人rén他tā就是jiùshì我wǒ以前yǐqián跟gēn你nǐ说shuō的de那个nàge人rén
He is (exactly) the one I told you about before.

我的wǒde狗gǒu就是jiùshì可愛kěài我的wǒde狗gǒu就是jiùshì可爱kěài
My dog is indeed cute.

蘋果pínguǒ的de手機shǒujī就是jiùshì好hǎo苹果píngguǒ的de手机shǒujī就是jiùshì好hǎo
Apple’s phone is indeed good.

Compare these two

那個nàge人rén是shì有yǒu50 隻zhī狗gǒu的de王Wáng先生xiānshēng那个nàge人rén是shì有yǒu50 只zhī狗gǒu的de王Wáng先生xiānsheng
That person is Mr. Wang, who has 50 dogs.
(It simply states a fact that the person in question is Mr. Wang who owns 50 dogs.)

那個nàge人rén就是jiùshì有yǒu50 隻zhī狗gǒu的de王Wáng先生xiānshēng那个nàge人rén就是jiùshì有yǒu50 只zhī狗gǒu的de王Wáng先生xiānsheng
That person is Mr. Wang, who has 50 dogs.
(This emphasis on the fact that the person in question is none other than Mr. Wang, who specifically owns 50 dogs. The use of 就是 jiùshì adds emphasis, suggesting that the speaker wants to emphasize that the person they are referring to is Mr. Wang, and no one else.)

就是 jiùshì + V

就是 jiùshì can be used to indicate “only because of that and nothing else.”

他tā就是jiùshì愛ài生氣shēngqì， 所以suǒyǐ才cái沒méi朋友péngyǒu他tā就是jiùshì爱ài生气shēngqì， 所以suǒyǐ才cái没méi朋友péngyou
He gets angry easily, that’s why he has no friends.

你nǐ就是jiùshì挑食tiāoshí， 所以suǒyǐ長zhǎng不bù高gāo你nǐ就是jiùshì挑食tiāoshí， 所以suǒyǐ长zhǎng不bù高gāo
You are so picky on food, that’s the only reason why you can’t grow taller.

媽媽māma一直yìzhí問wèn就是jiùshì因為yīnwèi擔心dānxīn你nǐ妈妈māma一直yìzhí问wèn就是jiùshì因为yīnwèi担心dànxīn你nǐ
Mom keeps asking only because she is worried about you.

You don’t buy it for me only because you don’t love me.
