就 jiù and 才 cái have many similar functions, but not the same, which confuses many Chinese learners. In this article, we are going to talk about 7 common comparisons of 就 jiù and 才 cái.
1. Time + 就/才
就 jiù | 才 cái |
---|---|
Earlier than expected If the action happened, you need to put 了 in the end. | Later than expected |
你为什么8点就来公司了? Nǐ wèishéme 8 diǎn jiù lái gōngsīle? Why did you come to the office at 8 o’clock? (This person should be here at 9, so 8 o’clock is earlier than your expectations.) 他18岁就大学毕业了 Tā 18 suì jiù dàxué bìyèle. He graduated from college when he was 18. (People usually graduated from college at 22, so you think 18 is earlier than what is normally expected.) 听说小王3月就要去中国了 * Tīng shuō Xiǎowáng 3 yuè jiù yào qù zhōngguóle. I heard that Xiao Wang is going to China in March. (You were expecting him to go to China in June, but he’s actually going in March, which is earlier than what was expected.) | 你为什么8点才来公司(呢)? * This sentence in not happen yet. The 了 here means “soon it will be changed” 要…了. |
