玻璃心 Bōlíxīn

ADJ. (Literal meaning is glass heart)

Like the English word “snowflake,” it means sensitive, emotional, fragile, or vulnerable. We use it to describe people whose feelings get hurt easily. Although it looks like a noun, it is actually an adjective.

Sometimes we convey the same idea in a different way. For example, instead of using the word “glass heart,” we could say “玻璃碎掉了” (Bōlí suì diàole, the glass shattered).

可以kěyǐ不要búyào那麼nàme玻璃心bōlíxīn嗎ma? 可以kěyǐ不要búyào那么nàme玻璃心bōlíxīn吗ma?
Please don’t be such a snowflake!

I think I heard the sound of breaking glass.
(I guess you are a snowflake.)

Don’t you think the spaghetti mom made is a little bland?

Um, I really want to add some salt and pepper.

Then why didn’t you do it? I thought I was the only one who felt the spaghetti was bland!

No way. You know that Mom is very sensitive! She was upset with me for a whole day because I said her sandwich was a little bit salty last time.

Right. If we really add some salt and pepper, we’ll probably hear the sound of glass shattering.

OneDotDot Chinese

Whenever I ask foreigners, "Do you speak Chinese?" they often reply, "a little bit" (yì diǎn diǎn). That inspired me to create this website and translate "yì diǎn diǎn" into the quirky and fun "One Dot Dot."

It’s also a reminder that learning Chinese is a journey, and progress happens one step at a time. By learning just a little bit every day, you’ll go far!
