* Explanation for polysyllabic words question 2: “dǎnxiǎoguǐ” is a 3 third tones combination word. It is “dǎnxiǎo” plus “guǐ”, so the first “dǎnxiǎo” becomes “dánxiǎo”, and then both xiǎo and guǐ are third tones, so xiǎo should also change to xiáo. Therefore, the final tone is dánxiáoguǐ.

In Chinese, ‘shit’ is 屎 shǐ, but it’s not commonly used. In Taiwan, to express ‘shit,’ people say ‘Kào,’ which means ‘cry’ in Taiwanese. In China, they say ‘tā mā de,’ which literally translates to ‘his mother’s.’

OneDotDot Chinese

Whenever I ask foreigners, "Do you speak Chinese?" they often reply, "a little bit" (yì diǎn diǎn). That inspired me to create this website and translate "yì diǎn diǎn" into the quirky and fun "One Dot Dot."

It’s also a reminder that learning Chinese is a journey, and progress happens one step at a time. By learning just a little bit every day, you’ll go far!
