These three words all mean “other,” but they’re used in different ways. Let’s look at 其他 qítā, 別的 béide, and 另外 lìngwài side by side.
其他 qítā – other / the rest
Things or people besides the ones already mentioned. Often means “the remaining ones.”

The other people have all left.

I still have other questions.
這家店賣書,也賣其他東西这家店卖书,也卖其他东西
This shop sells books and other things.

別的 béide – another / different
Something different from this one. Often used when choosing or changing.
我要別的顏色我要别的颜色
I want a different color.
還有別的嗎?还有别的吗?
Is there another one?
這個不好,換別的吧这个不好,换别的吧
This one isn’t good, let’s change to another.
📌 Think of 別的 biédde = not this one, a different one
另外 lìngwài – in addition / another / separately
Something extra, added, or separate. Often means “besides that” or “on top of that.”
我還有另外一個問題我还有另外一个问题
I have another question as well.
這件事我不管,另外的你自己決定这件事我不管,另外的你自己决定
I won’t handle this; the other parts are up to you.
另外,我明天不來另外,我明天不来
