離合詞离合词 líhécí — Separable Verbs 3

Two families this time. 動賓式动宾式 dòngbīnshì (Verb-Object) words split the same way you’ve already learned. 動補式动补式 dòngbǔshì (Verb-Complement) words split in a brand new way — to say “can” or “can’t.”

Separable verbs in Chinese HSK3

Not all separable verbs are built the same way. 放假放假, 見面见面, 結婚结婚, and 洗澡洗澡 are Verb + Object. 離開离开, 完成完成, and 分開分开 are Verb + Complement — and that difference changes what can slide into the middle.

1Quick Reference

WordTypeVerb + Second HalfMeaning
放假放假 fàngjià 動賓式 dòngbīn 放放 fàng “release” + 假假 jià “holiday” to have a day off
見面见面 jiànmiàn 動賓式 dòngbīn 見见 jiàn “see” + 面面 miàn “face” to meet in person
結婚结婚 jiéhūn 動賓式 dòngbīn 結结 jié “tie” + 婚婚 hūn “marriage” to get married
洗澡洗澡 xǐzǎo 動賓式 dòngbīn 洗洗 xǐ “wash” + 澡澡 zǎo “bath” to shower, to bathe
離開离开 líkāi 動補式 dòngbǔ 離离 lí “apart from” + 開开 kāi “away” to leave, to depart
完成完成 wánchéng 動補式 dòngbǔ 完完 wán “finish” + 成成 chéng “succeed” to complete, to finish
分開分开 fēnkāi 動補式 dòngbǔ 分分 fēn “divide” + 開开 kāi “away” to separate, to split up

2動賓式动宾式 — Verb-Object Type

These behave exactly like the words in Parts 1 and 2: 了了 le, 過过 guò, and quantities all go between the Verb and the Object. And since the Object is a thing (a holiday, a face, a marriage, a bath) — not a person — meeting or marrying someone requires 跟跟 gēn “with” to introduce them first.

我們wǒmen公司gōngsī下xià星期xīngqī放fàng假jià我们wǒmen公司gōngsī下xià星期xīngqī放fàng假jià
Our company is off next week.
我們wǒmen放fàng了le三sān天tiān的de假jià,一起yìqǐ去qù台南Táinán玩wán我们wǒmen放fàng了le三sān天tiān的de假jià,一起yìqǐ去qù台南Táinán玩wán
We had a three-day holiday, and went to Tainan together.
我wǒ明天míngtiān要yào跟gēn客戶kèhù見jiàn面miàn我wǒ明天míngtiān要yào跟gēn客户kèhù见jiàn面miàn
I have to meet with a client tomorrow.
我wǒ跟gēn男朋友nánpéngyǒu見jiàn過guò面miàn了le我wǒ跟gēn男朋友nánpéngyǒu见jiàn过guò面miàn了le
I’ve already met up with my boyfriend.
他們tāmen去年qùnián結jié婚hūn了le他们tāmen去年qùnián结jié婚hūn了le
They got married last year.
他tā結jié過guò兩liǎng次cì婚hūn他tā结jié过guò两liǎng次cì婚hūn
He has been married twice.
他tā洗xǐ了le半bàn個ge小時xiǎoshí的de澡zǎo他tā洗xǐ了le半bàn个ge小时xiǎoshí的de澡zǎo
He showered for half an hour.

3動補式动补式 — Verb-Complement Type

The second half of a 動補式动补式 word is a 補語补语 bǔyǔ (complement) — something added after the Verb to fill in the result, degree, direction, or possibility of the action. For the full picture of how complements work in Chinese, see the site’s overview of complements →

結果補語结果补语 — Result Complement

This is the most basic type — the second half simply states the outcome of the Verb. 完成完成 wánchéng = 完完 “finish” + 成成 “succeed”; 離開离开 líkāi = 離离 “leave” + 開开 “away.” No 得得 de, no quantity — just the plain word with ordinary aspect markers like 了了 le and 沒没 méi.

我wǒ完wán成chéng了le我wǒ的de作業zuòyè我wǒ完wán成chéng了le我wǒ的de作业zuòyè
I finished my homework.
他tā昨天zuótiān沒méi離lí開kāi我wǒ家jiā他tā昨天zuótiān没méi离lí开kāi我wǒ家jiā
He didn’t leave my house yesterday.

For more on how result complements work, see: 結果補語 — Result Complements →

可能補語可能补语 — Potential Complement

A potential complement says whether the result can or can’t happen — insert 得得 de (can) or 不不 bù (can’t) right between the Verb and the Complement.

我wǒ離lí不bù開kāi你nǐ我wǒ离lí不bù开kāi你nǐ
I can’t be without you. (Literally: “I can’t leave you.”)
你nǐ分fēn得de開kāi這zhè兩liǎng塊kuài冷凍lěngdòng肉ròu嗎ma你nǐ分fēn得de开kāi这zhè两liǎng块kuài冷冻lěngdòng肉ròu吗ma
Can you separate these two pieces of frozen meat?

For more on how potential complements work, see: 可能補語 — Potential Complements →

數量補語数量补语 — Quantitative Complement

A quantitative complement says how long the result has lasted, or how much of the action is done — and it usually attaches straight onto the Verb, with no 得得 de needed.

他們tāmen已經yǐjīng分fēn開kāi三sān年nián了le他们tāmen已经yǐjīng分fēn开kāi三sān年nián了le
They’ve been separated for three years.
這zhè個ge項目xiàngmù已經yǐjīng完wán成chéng一yí半bàn了le这zhè个ge项目xiàngmù已经yǐjīng完wán成chéng一yí半bàn了le
This project is already half finished.

4Common Mistakes

❌
我wǒ要yào見jiàn面miàn他tā我wǒ要yào见jiàn面miàn他tā
✅
我wǒ要yào跟gēn他tā見jiàn面miàn我wǒ要yào跟gēn他tā见jiàn面miàn
“I want to meet him.” 面面 miàn already fills the object slot, so a person can’t be added directly — use 跟跟 gēn “with” first.
❌
我wǒ想xiǎng結jié婚hūn他tā我wǒ想xiǎng结jié婚hūn他tā
✅
我wǒ想xiǎng跟gēn他tā結jié婚hūn我wǒ想xiǎng跟gēn他tā结jié婚hūn
“I want to marry him.” Same fix — 婚婚 hūn is the object, so the person needs 跟跟 gēn in front of it.
❌
我wǒ離lí開kāi不bù她tā我wǒ离lí开kāi不bù她tā
✅
我wǒ離lí不bù開kāi她tā我wǒ离lí不bù开kāi她tā
“I can’t be without her.” For 動補式动补式 words, 不不 bù must sit strictly between the Verb and the Complement — not after the whole word.
