離合詞离合词 líhécí — Separable Verbs 2

In English, “help,” “swim,” “dance,” and “run” are single words with no moving parts. In Chinese, all four secretly hide a Verb + Object — and that mismatch is exactly what makes them so easy to get wrong.

Separable verbs in Chinese HSK2

English has no way to split “swim,” “dance,” or “run” into two pieces — but 游泳游泳 yóuyǒng, 跳舞跳舞 tiàowǔ, 跑步跑步 pǎobù, and 幫忙帮忙 bāngmáng all are, in Chinese. That’s the whole reason they trip people up.

1Quick Reference

WordVerb + ObjectMeaning
幫忙帮忙 bāngmáng 幫帮 bāng “help” + 忙忙 máng “a busy matter” to help, to do a favor
游泳游泳 yóuyǒng 游游 yóu “swim” + 泳泳 yǒng “swimming” to swim
跳舞跳舞 tiàowǔ 跳跳 tiào “jump” + 舞舞 wǔ “dance” to dance
跑步跑步 pǎobù 跑跑 pǎo “run” + 步步 bù “step” to run, to jog

2Why These Four Trip Up English Speakers

“Help,” “swim,” “dance,” and “run” are single, unsplittable words in English — there’s no “part A” and “part B” to pull apart. But in Chinese, all four are secretly Verb + Object: 幫帮 bāng “help” + 忙忙 máng “a busy matter,” 游游 yóu “swim” + 泳泳 yǒng “swimming,” 跳跳 tiào “jump” + 舞舞 wǔ “dance,” and 跑跑 pǎo “run” + 步步 bù “step.” Because English has no equivalent, it’s easy to forget that something can — and often must — slide in between the two halves.

1. 了了 le Slides Into the Middle

Just like the words from Part 1, the completed-action marker 了了 le attaches directly to the Verb — so it lands between V and O, never at the very end.

我wǒ游yóu了le泳yǒng,覺jué得de很hěn累lèi我wǒ游yóu了le泳yǒng,觉jué得de很hěn累lèi
I swam, and felt tired.
她tā跳tiào了le舞wǔ,很hěn開心kāixīn她tā跳tiào了le舞wǔ,很hěn开心kāixīn
She danced, and was very happy.
他tā跑pǎo了le步bù,休息xiūxi了le一下yíxià他tā跑pǎo了le步bù,休息xiūxi了le一下yíxià
He ran, and rested for a bit.

2. Duration and Frequency Go in the Same Spot

A length of time (Verb + 了了 le + Duration + 的的 de + Object) or a count of times (次次 cì) slides into the exact same slot — never after the whole word.

我wǒ游yóu了le一yí個ge小時xiǎoshí的de泳yǒng我wǒ游yóu了le一yí个ge小时xiǎoshí的de泳yǒng
I swam for an hour.
她tā跳tiào了le半bàn個ge小時xiǎoshí的de舞wǔ她tā跳tiào了le半bàn个ge小时xiǎoshí的de舞wǔ
She danced for half an hour.
他tā跑pǎo了le三十sānshí分鐘fēnzhōng的de步bù他tā跑pǎo了le三十sānshí分钟fēnzhōng的de步bù
He ran for thirty minutes.
我們wǒmen一yí個ge星期xīngqī跳tiào兩liǎng次cì舞wǔ我们wǒmen一yí个ge星期xīngqī跳tiào两liǎng次cì舞wǔ
We dance twice a week.
他tā一yí個ge月yuè游yóu一yí次cì泳yǒng他tā一yí个ge月yuè游yóu一yí次cì泳yǒng
He swims once a month.

3. A Question Word Fits There Too

Just like 上什麼課上什么课 from Part 1, a question word about the Object slots into the exact same spot.

你nǐ想xiǎng跳tiào什麼shénme舞wǔ你nǐ想xiǎng跳tiào什么shénme舞wǔ
What kind of dance do you want to dance?

3幫忙帮忙 bāngmáng Is Special — Insert a Person

忙忙 máng means “a busy matter,” not “a person” — so to say who you’re helping, that person has to slide in between 幫帮 bāng and 忙忙 máng, usually with 一個一个 or 的的 de.

你nǐ可以kěyǐ幫bāng我wǒ一yì個ge忙máng嗎ma你nǐ可以kěyǐ帮bāng我wǒ一yì个ge忙máng吗ma
Can you do me a favor?
謝謝xièxie你nǐ幫bāng了le我wǒ的de忙máng谢谢xièxie你nǐ帮bāng了le我wǒ的de忙máng
Thank you for helping me.
我wǒ可以kěyǐ幫bāng你nǐ什麼shénme忙máng我wǒ可以kěyǐ帮bāng你nǐ什么shénme忙máng
What can I help you with?

4V vs VO — With the Complement 得得 de

Just like 睡睡 vs 睡覺睡觉 from Part 1, all four of these words also have a Verb-only form: 游游, 跳跳, 跑跑, 幫帮. When you add a 補語补语 bǔyǔ (complement) with 得得 de — for saying how something is done — it attaches directly to the Verb, so either drop the Object, or repeat the whole word before 得得 de.

她tā跳tiào舞wǔ跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo她tā跳tiào舞wǔ跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo
She dances very well. (verb repeated, object kept)
他tā跑pǎo步bù跑pǎo得de很hěn快kuài他tā跑pǎo步bù跑pǎo得de很hěn快kuài
He runs very fast. (verb repeated, object kept)
她tā跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo她tā跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo
She dances very well. (object dropped — same meaning, simpler)
我wǒ游yóu得de不bù好hǎo我wǒ游yóu得de不bù好hǎo
I don’t swim well. (object dropped)
❌
她tā跳tiào舞wǔ得de很hěn好hǎo她tā跳tiào舞wǔ得de很hěn好hǎo
✅
她tā跳tiào舞wǔ跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo她tā跳tiào舞wǔ跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo
✅
她tā跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo她tā跳tiào得de很hěn好hǎo
“She dances very well.” 得得 de has to attach straight onto the Verb 跳跳 tiào — it can’t glue onto the tail end of 跳舞跳舞 tiàowǔ. Repeat the whole word first, or just drop the Object.

5Common Mistakes

❌
我wǒ想xiǎng幫bāng忙máng你nǐ我wǒ想xiǎng帮bāng忙máng你nǐ
✅
我wǒ想xiǎng幫bāng你nǐ的de忙máng我wǒ想xiǎng帮bāng你nǐ的de忙máng
“I want to help you.” A person can’t come after the whole compound. Either put the person in the middle (幫你的忙帮你的忙), or drop 忙忙 máng entirely and just say 幫你帮你 — both are correct.
