太太 tài ・ 不太不太 bútài — “Too” / “Not Very”

太太 tài on its own means “too” — an excessive degree. Add the negation 不不 bù in front and 不太不太 bútài softens a statement into “not very.”

太 tài and 不太 bútài in Chinese

不太不太 bútài is widely used in conversation because it sounds softer and less blunt than an outright negation — a natural fit for Chinese speakers’ tendency to avoid being overly direct.

1 太太 tài Alone — “Too”

Subject + 太太 tài + Adjective/Verb, usually closed off with 了了 le at the end to underline the excess.

今天jīntiān太tài熱rè了le今天jīntiān太tài热rè了le
It’s too hot today.

你nǐ喝hē太tài多duō酒jiǔ了le你nǐ喝hē太tài多duō酒jiǔ了le

2 不太不太 bútài + Adjective

Expresses a degree lower than expected or desired — but not completely absent.

3 不太不太 bútài + Verb

With verbs, 不太不太 bútài shows a lack of frequency or intensity in doing the action.

Usage in Spoken Language

不太不太 bútài sounds softer and less direct than an outright negation, which fits the tendency in Chinese to avoid being overly blunt.

我wǒ覺得juéde他tā不bù太tài好hǎo我wǒ觉得juéde他tā不bù太tài好hǎo
I think he’s not very good. (A tactful way to say someone isn’t great, rather than a blunt 他不好.)

He doesn’t really like spicy food. (He might tolerate it, but it’s really not his favorite.)

4 Common Mistake

不太不太 bútài is a fixed unit — negation first, then 太太 tài. Reversing the order breaks the set phrase.

❌
我wǒ太tài不bù餓è我wǒ太tài不bù饿è
✅
我wǒ不bù太tài餓è我wǒ不bù太tài饿è
不太不太 bútài always keeps this exact word order. Flipping it to 太不太不 tàibù sounds foreign and unnatural.
WordMeaningExample
太太 tài Too / extremely — often paired with 了了 le 太貴了太贵了 “too expensive”
不太不太 bútài Not very / not particularly — a softer negation 不太貴不太贵 “not very expensive”
