总 zǒng / 总是 zǒngshì — “Always”

总是 zǒngshì describes something that happens every single time, no exceptions — stronger than 常常 chángcháng or 经常 jīngcháng, which just mean “a lot.”

Both sit before the verb. 总是 zǒngshì is the everyday form; bare 总 zǒng shows up in set patterns like 总会 zǒng huì (“will always/eventually”) and 总不 zǒng bù (“just never”).

1Structure

S + 总/总是 + V

總是 is the word you’ll use most — but bare 總 behaves a bit differently.

总 zǒng Leans on fixed patterns Rarely modifies an ordinary verb by itself — it usually shows up inside set combinations like 总会 zǒng huì (“will always, eventually”) or 总不 zǒng bù (“just never”).
他tā总是zǒngshì迟到chídào。
He’s always late.
我wǒ妈妈māma总是zǒngshì说shuō我wǒ太tài瘦shòu。
My mom always says I’m too thin.
你nǐ总是zǒngshì这么zhème忙máng吗ma？
Are you always this busy?
这zhè家jiā店diàn总是zǒngshì客满kèmǎn。
This restaurant is always full.

2The Frequency Spectrum

总是 zǒngshì sits at one end of a scale — here’s where it lands next to 常常 chángcháng, 有时 yǒushí, 偶尔 ǒu’ěr, and 不曾 bùcéng.

Bare 总 zǒng rarely modifies an ordinary verb directly — it needs a fixed pattern like 總會/總不, or else you need the full 總是 zǒngshì.
