常 cháng / 经常 jīngcháng — “Often”

常 cháng, 常常 chángcháng, and 經常 jīngcháng all mean “often” — simple habitual repetition, no special nuance needed.

常 / 經常 — Often, Chinese grammar

All three go right before the verb. 常常 chángcháng is the most common in everyday speech; 经常 jīngcháng feels a touch more formal; bare 常 cháng is more literary and often shows up in shorter phrases.

1Structure

S + 常/常常/经常 + V

All three can be translated as “often,” but they don’t behave quite the same way.

Word Register Usage
常常 chángcháng Most colloquial The everyday go-to — frequent repetition with short gaps in between. Can’t be negated with 不 directly; for “doesn’t often,” use 不常 bùcháng instead.
常 cháng Neutral / literary Means the same thing but a touch more literary. Unlike 常常, it CAN be negated directly: 不常 bùcháng, “doesn’t often.”
经常 jīngcháng More formal Functionally close to 常常, but carries a slightly more formal, objective tone — common in writing, news, or more serious contexts.
我wǒ常常chángcháng喝hē咖啡kāfēi。
I often drink coffee.
他tā经常jīngcháng忘记wàngjì带dài钥匙yàoshi。
He often forgets to bring his keys.
你nǐ常cháng出国chūguó旅游lǚyóu吗ma？

2The Frequency Spectrum

常 cháng and 經常 jīngcháng sit in the middle of a scale — here’s where they land next to 总是 zǒngshì, 有时 yǒushí, 偶尔 ǒu’ěr, and 不曾 bùcéng.

3Common Mistake

❌ Tiffany不bù常常chángcháng喝hē珍珠zhēnzhū奶茶nǎichá
✅ Tiffany不bù常cháng喝hē珍珠zhēnzhū奶茶nǎichá
常常 chángcháng can’t be negated directly with 不 — drop the reduplication and use 不常 bùcháng instead.
