忽然 hūrán — “Suddenly”

忽然 hūrán emphasizes that something happened within a short span of time — it’s about the quickness of the change, not necessarily whether it was expected. It’s an adverb only, and it can’t be preceded by a degree adverb like 很 hěn or 非常 fēicháng, or used with 的 de to modify a noun.

Suddenly in Chinese 忽然 hūrán

忽然 hūrán only works as an adverbial modifier — never as an adjective, and never with 的 de before a noun. Its focus is speed: something happened quickly, within a short window of time, whether or not it was expected.

1 Usage

S + 忽然 hūrán + VP

忽然 hūrán goes right before the verb phrase. No degree adverb (很 hěn, 非常 fēicháng, 太 tài…) can come in front of it.

运动yùndòng完wán我wǒ忽然hūrán非常fēicháng饿è
After exercising, I suddenly became very hungry.
怎么zěnme忽然hūrán下xià大雨dàyǔ
How did it suddenly start pouring rain?
我wǒ忽然hūrán觉得juéde你nǐ很hěn可怕kěpà
I find you very scary, right in this moment.
啊a！忽然hūrán想xiǎng起来qǐlái我wǒ忘wàng了le买mǎi鸡蛋jīdàn

2 Common Mistakes

忽然 hūrán trips people up because it looks and behaves like 突然 tūrán — but it only works as an adverb.

忽然 hūrán is an adverb only, so it can’t take 的 de to modify a noun. Use 突然 tūrán instead for that.
