居然 jūrán is a special adverb: it can sit right after the subject as usual, or jump in front of it for extra emphasis. Either way, the 然 rán always stays — it’s never shortened.

S + 居然 jūrán
The usual position — right after the subject, just like 竟然 jìngrán, but with a stronger, more colloquial punch.
這電影這麼好看，他居然看到睡著了这电影这么好看，他居然看到睡着了
This movie is so good — I can’t believe he fell asleep watching it.

Cultural Note: Chinese Wedding Anniversaries
Wedding anniversaries carry real cultural weight and tend to be marked privately, rather than with friends invited along the way many Western couples do. The 50th anniversary stands out in particular — it’s called 金婚 jīnhūn, the “Golden Wedding.” Among younger couples, the 1st, 10th, 20th, and 30th years also get special attention, often paired with a “symbolic gift” for that stage of the relationship. Moral of the story: if your partner is Chinese, don’t forget the gift.

居然 jūrán is flexible enough to jump in front of the subject too, for extra emphasis — something 竟然 jìngrán can’t do.

2 Common Mistakes
Unlike 竟然 jìngrán, which can shorten to 竟 jìng, 居然 jūrán can never drop its 然 rán.
