To say an action is happening right now, put 在 or 正在 in front of the verb. 在 covers both “happening at this moment” and “in the middle of doing something over a longer stretch.” 正在 zooms in on this exact moment. In everyday speech, 在 is the one people reach for most.
一 The Basic Pattern
Subject + 在 / 正在 + Verb + Object
我在學学中文
I am learning Chinese.
Could mean you’re studying right this second, or that you’re in the middle of learning it generally.
我正在正在學学中文
I am learning Chinese right now.
正在 pins it to this exact moment.
爸爸在生氣生气,你現在现在別别去跟他說話说话
Dad is angry — don’t go talk to him right now.
“Angry” isn’t an adjective in Chinese; 生氣生气 (shēngqì) works like a verb, which is why 在 can sit in front of it.
Since text messages can’t carry tone of voice, people often tack 呢 (ne) onto the end to soften how it sounds — otherwise a blunt “I’m busy” can come across as annoyed.
我正在正在看電視电视呢!你等一下等一下!
I’m watching TV right now! Hold on a second.
Two texting phrases you’ll see constantly from Chinese-speaking friends: “在忙嗎在忙吗” (zài máng ma) to ask if you’re busy, and “在嗎在吗” (zài ma) to check if you’re around.
二 在 vs 正在
They overlap a lot, but the feel is slightly different.
在 zài
我在學学中文
Works for both a short moment and a long stretch of time. This is the everyday, spoken-language default.
正在 zhèngzài
我正在正在學学中文
Emphasizes that it’s happening at this exact moment, right as you speak.
三 Negation: Almost Always 沒没
About 95% of the time you’ll use 沒没 (méi), not 不 (bù). The reason: you’re denying a plain fact about what’s happening, not someone’s choice or intention.
Subject + 沒没 + 在 + Verb + Object
老師老师沒没在教課教课
The teacher is not teaching.
他沒没在寫写作業作业,他在睡覺睡觉
He isn’t doing his homework — he’s sleeping.
No judgment here, just stating what’s happening.
你為什麼为什么不在寫写作業作业!?
Why aren’t you doing your homework!?
This is the 5% case — 不 shows up because there’s a feeling or expectation behind it, not a neutral fact.
四 Asking Questions
Add 嗎吗 (ma) at the end. One important limit: unlike many other verbs, 在 for ongoing actions cannot use the verb-not-verb pattern.
小狗在吃飯吃饭嗎吗?
Is the puppy eating?
小狗沒没在吃飯吃饭嗎吗?
Is the puppy not eating?
In Taiwan you’ll often hear questions built with 有沒有有没有 (yǒuméiyǒu) + 在, as in “你有沒有在看書你有没有在看书?” (Are you reading?). It’s very common in everyday speech, but it isn’t standard Mandarin — so it’s best avoided on an HSK test.
五 Common Mistakes
❌ 小貓小猫在不在睡覺睡觉?
✅ 小貓小猫在睡覺睡觉嗎吗?
The verb-not-verb pattern (在不在) doesn’t work for ongoing actions — use 嗎吗 at the end instead.
❌ 老師老师不在教課教课
✅ 老師老师沒没在教課教课
Simply stating that something isn’t happening calls for 沒没. Save 不 for when you’re expressing a feeling or expectation about it.
❌ 我學学在中文
✅ 我在學学中文
在 goes in front of the verb, not after it.

❌ Try Again
我正在正在吃飯饭呢
呢 goes at the very end — it’s what takes the edge off the tone in a text.
“My older brother isn’t studying.” (just stating the fact)
Tap words below to build the sentence
❌ Try Again
哥哥沒没在讀读書书
Plain statements of fact take 沒没, and it goes in front of 在. The 不 tile isn’t needed here.
“Why aren’t you sleeping!?” (you’re annoyed about it)
Tap words below to build the sentence
❌ Try Again
你為什麼为什么不在睡睡覺觉
This is the 5% case — there’s a feeling behind the question, so 不 is right instead of 沒没.
“Is the kitten sleeping?”
Tap words below to build the sentence
❌ Try Again
小貓小猫在睡睡覺觉嗎吗?
Use 嗎吗 at the end — the 在不在 pattern doesn’t work for ongoing actions, so the 不 tile stays unused.
“Is the puppy not eating?”
Tap words below to build the sentence
❌ Try Again
小狗沒没在吃飯饭嗎吗?
沒没 + 在 makes it negative, and 嗎吗 at the end makes it a question.
“Are you busy?” — the short texting version, with the subject dropped
Tap words below to build the sentence
❌ Try Again
在忙嗎吗?
In texts the subject usually gets dropped, so the 你 tile isn’t needed — 在忙嗎在忙吗 is the everyday form.
“Mom is angry.”
Tap words below to build the sentence
❌ Try Again
媽媽妈妈在生氣生气
生氣生气 behaves like a verb in Chinese, so 在 can go right in front of it.
“He is doing his homework.”
Tap words below to build the sentence
❌ Try Again
他在寫写作業作业
Subject + 在 + Verb + Object, with 作業作业 as the object.
