吗 ma vs 呢 ne
Both words go at the end of a sentence, and both show up in questions — that’s why people mix them up. 吗 ma turns a sentence into a yes-or-no question. 呢 ne is never a yes-or-no question — it does other jobs, and which job depends on what comes before it.
一 吗 ma
Add 吗 ma to the end of a sentence to turn it into a yes-or-no question. Use it when you really don’t know the answer.
二 呢 ne
呢 ne never turns a sentence into a yes-or-no question. It has other jobs, and it changes based on what’s around it. Here are the 5 most common ones.
1. Bounce-back question — “What about…?”
Noun / Clause + 呢 ne. You already said something, and now you’re asking the other person the same thing.
2. “Where is…?”
Noun + 呢 ne. Use this to ask where a person or thing is.
3. Making a question sound softer
Goes with a question word like 什么 shénme, “what” or 为什么 wèishénme, “why”, and just makes the question sound a bit more relaxed and casual.
4. Trying to convince someone
Usually shows up with 吧 ba later in the sentence. You’re trying to talk the other person into something.
5. Something is happening right now
Usually shows up with 在 zài earlier in the sentence, to say something is going on right now.

四 Common Mistakes
❌ 你忙呢？
✅ 你忙嗎你忙吗？
“Are you busy?” is a yes-or-no question, so you need 吗 here, not 呢.
❌ 我的錢嗎我的钱吗？
✅ 我的錢呢我的钱呢？
“Where is it” needs 呢. 吗 would turn this into a totally different question — “is this my money?”
❌ 我在吃飯嗎我在吃饭吗！
✅ 我在吃飯呢我在吃饭呢！
To say something is happening right now, use 在 + 呢. 吗 would accidentally turn this into a question you didn’t mean to ask.
