不 bù and 沒没 méi

Both 不 (bù) and 沒没 (méi) express negation in Chinese — but they belong to different contexts, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes learners make.

不 bù and 沒 méi

The good news: which one to use almost always comes down to what follows it — a noun, a stative verb (adjective), or a verb. Once you know that, the choice is nearly automatic.

1 At a glance

NounSV (Adj.)Verb
不 bù✕✓✓
沒没 méi✓✕✓

2 With a noun

Always use 沒没 méi

我wǒ我wǒ沒méi没méi工作gōngzuò工作gōngzuò、沒méi没méi錢qián钱qián、沒méi没méi未來wèilái未来wèilái,只zhǐ只zhǐ想xiǎng想xiǎng當dāng当dāng米蟲mǐchóng米虫mǐchóng
I have no job, no money, no future. I just want to be a NEET.
💬 米蟲 mǐchóng

Literally “rice bug” — a young person who is neither studying, working, nor training. They just eat and sleep all day, doing nothing, relying on others to take care of them.

他tā他tā沒méi没méi想法xiǎngfǎ想法xiǎngfǎ
He has no idea.
📌 Optional 有 yǒu

You can insert 有 yǒu between 沒 méi and the noun without changing the meaning.

我wǒ我wǒ沒有méiyǒu没有méiyǒu時間shíjiān时间shíjiān
I don’t have time.
你nǐ你nǐ沒有méiyǒu没有méiyǒu酒jiǔ酒jiǔ嗎ma吗ma?
You don’t have alcohol?

3 With a SV (Adj.)

Always use 不 bù

我wǒ我wǒ不bù不bù矮ǎi矮ǎi、不bú不bú胖pàng胖pàng、不bú不bú笨bèn笨bèn也yě也yě不bù不bù醜chǒu丑chǒu
I am not short, not fat, not stupid, and also not ugly.
📖 Tone sandhi

Not sure why 不 bù keeps changing tone above (bù → bú)? Read the full explanation here.

那個nàge那个nàge不bú不bú貴guì贵guì嗎ma吗ma?
That is not expensive?
📌 Good to know

Sometimes you may hear 沒 méi + SV in casual speech — that’s because the verb after it has simply been omitted.

你nǐ你nǐ沒méi没méi變biàn变biàn胖pàng胖pàng → 你nǐ你nǐ沒méi没méi胖pàng胖pàng
You didn’t get fat.

4 With a verb

This is where the real choice lives. 不 bù negates an action someone doesn’t want or doesn’t intend to do — it points forward, toward intention. 沒 méi negates something that didn’t happen, usually in the past — it points backward, toward fact.

我wǒ我wǒ今天jīntiān今天jīntiān不bù不bù吃chī吃chī晚飯wǎnfàn晚饭wǎnfàn
I am not going to have dinner tonight. (your decision)
我wǒ我wǒ今天jīntiān今天jīntiān沒méi没méi吃chī吃chī晚飯wǎnfàn晚饭wǎnfàn
I didn’t have dinner tonight. (the fact)
你nǐ你nǐ昨天zuótiān昨天zuótiān為什麼wèishénme为什么wèishénme不bù不bù跟gēn跟gēn我wǒ我wǒ說話shuōhuà说话shuōhuà
Why didn’t you talk to me yesterday? (I know you did it on purpose)
你nǐ你nǐ昨天zuótiān昨天zuótiān為什麼wèishénme为什么wèishénme沒méi没méi跟gēn跟gēn我wǒ我wǒ說話shuōhuà说话shuōhuà
Why didn’t you talk to me yesterday? (just asking — a plain fact, no assumption)
我wǒ我wǒ不bù不bù喝酒hējiǔ喝酒hējiǔ
I don’t drink. (habit / stance)
我wǒ我wǒ沒méi没méi喝酒hējiǔ喝酒hējiǔ = 我wǒ我wǒ沒有méiyǒu没有méiyǒu喝酒hējiǔ喝酒hējiǔ
I didn’t drink. (a specific occasion)
📌 Good to know

不 bù vs 沒 méi isn’t really about tense — it’s about intention vs. fact. Ask yourself: “Am I describing a choice/stance, or reporting what did or didn’t happen?” Choice/stance → 不 bù. What happened (or didn’t) → 沒 méi.

⚠️ Common mistake — 是 shì and 有 yǒu

是 shì (“to be”) looks like it should follow the SV pattern, but it’s an exception: it only ever takes 不 bù → 不是 bú shì, never 沒是 méi shì.

有 yǒu (“to have”) is the opposite exception: it only ever takes 沒 méi → 沒有 méiyǒu, never 不有 bùyǒu.

❌我wǒ我wǒ不bù不bù有yǒu有yǒu錢qián钱qián
✅我wǒ我wǒ沒有méiyǒu没有méiyǒu錢qián钱qián
有yǒu有yǒu only ever takes 沒méi没méi — never 不bù不bù, no matter how tempting the word order feels.
❌我wǒ我wǒ沒méi没méi喜歡xǐhuan喜欢xǐhuan吃chī吃chī辣là辣là
✅我wǒ我wǒ不bù不bù喜歡xǐhuan喜欢xǐhuan吃chī吃chī辣là辣là
喜歡xǐhuan喜欢xǐhuan describes an ongoing stance, not a one-time completed action — that calls for 不bù不bù, not 沒méi没méi.

5 還还沒没 háiméi — not yet

還沒 háiméi is 沒 méi’s close companion, used to say something hasn’t happened yet — with the implication that it’s still expected to.

我wǒ我wǒ還沒háiméi还没háiméi喝酒hējiǔ喝酒hējiǔ
I haven’t had a drink yet.
她tā她tā還沒háiméi还没háiméi死sǐ死sǐ
She’s not dead yet. (she’s still alive)
我wǒ我wǒ還沒有háiméiyǒu还没有háiméiyǒu寫作業xiě zuòyè写作业xiě zuòyè
I haven’t written my homework yet.
