多 duō ・ 好 hǎo ・ 最 zuì — Everyday Degree Adverbs

最最 zuì marks a superlative, 好好 hǎo is a casual, conversational “so,” and 多多 duō turns a sentence into an exclamation — “how…!”

多 duō 好 hǎo 最 zuì degree adverbs

Unlike 很很 hěn or 非常非常 fēicháng, these three each have a distinct job: ranking something at the top, sounding casual in speech, or exclaiming about a degree.

1 最最 zuì — “The Most”

Subject + 最最 zuì + Adjective marks the top of a group — the superlative.

我wǒ的de狗gǒu最zuì可愛kěài我wǒ的de狗gǒu最zuì可爱kěài
My dog is the cutest.
魔鏡mójìng魔鏡mójìng,誰shéi是shì世界shìjiè上shàng最zuì美měi的de人rén?魔镜mójìng魔镜mójìng,谁shéi是shì世界shìjiè上shàng最zuì美měi的de人rén?
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?
你nǐ是shì你們nǐmen家jiā最zuì高gāo的de人rén嗎ma?你nǐ是shì你们nǐmen家jiā最zuì高gāo的de人rén吗ma?
Are you the tallest person in your family?

2 好好 hǎo — The Casual “So”

In speech, 好好 hǎo works like a chattier version of 很很 hěn — informal, a little more emotional.

好久hǎojiǔ不bù見jiàn!好久hǎojiǔ不bù见jiàn!
Long time no see!
這裡zhèlǐ好hǎo熱rè喔o这里zhèlǐ好hǎo热rè喔o
It’s so hot here.
你nǐ好hǎo聰明cōngmíng你nǐ好hǎo聪明cōngmíng
You’re so smart.

3 多多 duō — “How…!”

多多 duō + Adjective + 啊啊 a turns a plain description into an exclamation of degree.

這裡zhèlǐ的de風景fēngjǐng多duō美měi啊a!这里zhèlǐ的de风景fēngjǐng多duō美měi啊a!
How beautiful the scenery here is!
你nǐ多duō聰明cōngmíng啊a!你nǐ多duō聪明cōngmíng啊a!
How smart you are!
時間shíjiān過guò得de多duō快kuài啊a!时间shíjiān过guò得de多duō快kuài啊a!
How fast time flies!
WordFeelStructure
最最 zuì Superlative, “the most” S + 最 + Adj
好好 hǎo Casual, conversational “so” S + 好 + Adj
多多 duō Exclamatory, “how…!” 多 + Adj + 啊

4 Common Mistake

Dropping the final 啊啊 a after a 多多 duō exclamation makes it sound like a genuine question instead.

❌
你nǐ多duō聰明cōngmíng?你nǐ多duō聪明cōngmíng?
✅
你nǐ多duō聰明cōngmíng啊a!你nǐ多duō聪明cōngmíng啊a!
Without 啊啊 a and the exclamation mark, 你多聰明你多聪明 reads like “How smart are you?” — a real question — instead of “How smart you are!”
