连动句 liándòngjù — Serial Verb Sentences
A serial verb sentence strings two verb phrases together for the same subject, with no linking word between them — one action leads right into the next.
Where English needs “to” or “and” to connect two actions (“go to buy,” “take a bus and go”), Chinese just places the verb phrases one after another.
1 Go/Come + Verb (Purpose)
The first verb is 去 qù (“go”) or 来 lái (“come”), and the second verb says what the person goes or comes to do.
我去圖書館看書我去图书馆看书
I go to the library to read.
我們去餐廳吃飯我们去餐厅吃饭
We go to the restaurant to eat.
他來我家玩他来我家玩
He comes to my house to hang out.
2 Means + Verb (How Something Is Done)
The first verb phrase says the method or tool, and the second says the action it’s used for.
他坐飛機去台灣他坐飞机去台湾
He takes a plane to Taiwan.
我開車去上班我开车去上班
I drive to work.
她用手機打電話她用手机打电话
She uses her phone to make a call.
3 Common Mistakes
❌
我去電影院和看電影我去电影院和看电影
✅
我去電影院看電影我去电影院看电影
Unlike English “go and watch,” Chinese serial verbs sit side by side with no linking word like 和 hé in between.
