斷然 duànrán,断然 duànrán, 截然 jiérán & 毅然 yìrán

All three are literary, single-word adverbs, but only two of them mean “resolutely.” 斷然 duànrán断然 duànrán and 毅然 yìrán毅然 yìrán both describe firm, decisive action — with different emotional colouring. 截然 jiérán截然 jiérán is the odd one out: it doesn’t describe a decision at all, but a sharp, total contrast between two things.

斷然 duànrán 截然 jiérán 毅然 yìrán Chinese Grammar

斷然 duànrán断然 duànrán leans firm and categorical — often paired with refusing or denying something. 毅然 yìrán毅然 yìrán leans admirable and brave — a hard decision made with unwavering resolve. 截然 jiérán截然 jiérán almost always shows up locked inside two fixed phrases: 截然不同 jiérán bùtóng截然不同 jiérán bùtóng (“completely different”) and 截然相反 jiérán xiāngfǎn截然相反 jiérán xiāngfǎn (“diametrically opposed”).

1 Structure

S + 斷然 duànrán断然 duànrán + V

Most often modifies verbs of refusal, denial, or a sudden firm stance — 拒絕 jùjué拒绝 jùjué (“refuse”), 否認 fǒurèn否认 fǒurèn (“deny”), 採取行動 cǎiqǔ xíngdòng采取行动 cǎiqǔ xíngdòng (“take action”). The tone is firm and categorical, sometimes a little cold.

S + 毅然 yìrán毅然 yìrán + V

Most often modifies verbs like 決定 juédìng决定 juédìng (“decide”), 選擇 xuǎnzé选择 xuǎnzé (“choose”), or 放棄 fàngqì放弃 fàngqì (“give up”). Unlike 斷然 duànrán断然 duànrán, it carries a positive, often admiring tone — someone doing something hard and brave without hesitation.

Bonus: 毅然決然 yìránjuérán毅然决然 yìránjuérán

This four-character set phrase doubles down on 毅然 yìrán毅然 yìrán by pairing it with 決然 juérán决然 juérán (“decisively”). It means “resolutely and without a shred of hesitation,” and shows up often in writing about someone walking away from something big — a career, a relationship, a comfortable life.

他tā毅然決然yìránjuérán地de放棄fàngqì了le唾手可得tuòshǒukědé的de機會jīhuì他tā毅然决然yìránjuérán地de放弃fàngqì了le唾手可得tuòshǒukědé的de机会jīhuì

A + 截然不同 jiérán bùtóng截然不同 jiérán bùtóng / 截然相反 jiérán xiāngfǎn截然相反 jiérán xiāngfǎn

This is worth calling out clearly: 截然 jiérán截然 jiérán does not mean “resolutely” — it means “sharply, completely (distinct).” It almost never appears alone; it’s locked into these two set phrases, describing a stark contrast between two things.

兩人liǎngrén的de個性gèxìng截然不同jiérán bùtóng两人liǎngrén的de个性gèxìng截然不同jiérán bùtóng

2 Common Mistakes

The three words get mixed up because they’re all formal single-character-plus-然 adverbs — but they don’t share a meaning.

❌
她tā截然jiérán辭去cíqù工作gōngzuò,投身tóushēn公益gōngyì她tā截然jiérán辞去cíqù工作gōngzuò,投身tóushēn公益gōngyì

截然 jiérán截然 jiérán only describes a stark contrast between two things (截然不同 jiérán bùtóng截然不同 jiérán bùtóng) — it can’t modify a decisive action. 毅然 yìrán毅然 yìrán is the right word for a brave, resolute choice.
❌
罪犯zuìfàn毅然yìrán決定juédìng逃跑táopǎo罪犯zuìfàn毅然yìrán决定juédìng逃跑táopǎo
✅
罪犯zuìfàn斷然duànrán決定juédìng逃跑táopǎo罪犯zuìfàn断然duànrán决定juédìng逃跑táopǎo
毅然 yìrán毅然 yìrán carries a positive, admiring tone — it doesn’t fit a criminal fleeing the scene. 斷然 duànrán断然 duànrán is neutral and firm, without the moral shine, so it’s the better fit here.
