Saying a two-syllable verb twice (AB → ABAB) softens the action. It makes it sound casual, relaxed, or like you’re just trying it out for a bit: “discuss it a little,” “take a little rest.” You’ll hear it all the time in spoken Chinese, especially in suggestions.

Repeat the whole verb: 討論 tǎolùn讨论 tǎolùn → 討論討論 tǎolùn tǎolùn讨论讨论 tǎolùn tǎolùn, 休息 xiūxí休息 xiūxi → 休息休息 xiūxí xiūxí休息休息 xiūxi xiūxi. The meaning is like adding “a little” or “for a bit.”

TonesIn mainland Mandarin, the second syllable of many verbs is light (neutral tone), and it stays light when doubled: 休息休息 xiūxí xiūxí休息休息 xiūxi xiūxi, 認識認識 rènshì rènshì认识认识 rènshi rènshi. In Taiwan, the full tones are usually kept.
二 ABAB (Verbs) vs. AABB (Adjectives)
Don’t confuse verbs with adjectives! Two-syllable verbs double as ABAB, but two-syllable adjectives double as AABB.

One-syllable verbs double as VV or V一V: 看看 kànkan, 看一看 kàn yi kàn. Two-syllable verbs only use ABAB, with no 一 in the middle.

ABAB already means “a little” or “a bit,” so don’t add 一下 yíxià or 一點 yìdiǎn一点 yìdiǎn after it.
