A field guide for learners

Chinese Measure Words

A flock of birds. A herd of cows. English has measure words too — it’s just optional. Chinese uses them constantly, and skipping one isn’t a stylistic choice; it’s a mistake.

The basics

What Is a Measure Word?

In English, you can say “There is a flock of birds” or just “There are five birds” — the measure word is optional. In Chinese, it never is. Whenever a number (or a demonstrative like “this” or “that”) comes before a noun, a measure word has to sit between them.

There are over two hundred measure words in Chinese, and most nouns pair with one specific to their meaning — which is exactly why they’re such a common sticking point for learners.

Every noun, even a single, countable one, needs a measure word in Chinese.

一yì杯bēi水shuǐ一yì杯bēi水shuǐ a cup of water
五wǔ隻zhī狗gǒu五wǔ只zhī狗gǒu five dogs
這zhè本běn書shū这zhè本běn书shū this book
那nà輛liàng車chē那nà辆liàng车chē that car

Exception

The measure word disappears when a noun is used generically — talking about the category, not a specific quantity.

書shū很hěn好hǎo书shū很hěn好hǎo Book(s) are good. — generic, no quantity in mind
我wǒ有yǒu筆bǐ我wǒ有yǒu笔bǐ I have pen(s). — generic

Pro Tip: The Universal Measure Word

Feeling overwhelmed by 200+ measure words? When in doubt, just use 個ge个ge. It is the most common and versatile measure word in Chinese. While native speakers will know you used a “generic” one instead of the specific one, they will understand you perfectly!

A special case

Time Nouns with Measure Words

With time nouns, the measure word can sometimes vanish entirely — and the reason is more about rhythm than grammar. Chinese speech has a soft preference for even-numbered syllables. A one-syllable time word already sits at an odd count, so the measure word usually gets dropped to keep things balanced — even once the number climbs into the double digits.

NumberMWOne-syllable wordMeaning
一yì一yì ✗ 天tiān天tiān 1 day
一yì一yì ✗ 年nián年nián 1 year
一yì一yì ✗ 周zhōu周zhōu 1 week
十一shíyī十一shíyī ✗ 天tiān天tiān 11 days
三十sānshí三十sānshí ✗ 年nián年nián 30 years

A two-syllable time noun, though, is already at an even count — so the measure word usually stays, to keep that even rhythm rather than break it.

NumberMWTwo-syllable wordMeaning

Note

“Month” changes meaning depending on whether the measure word is there. 二月èryuè二月èryuè means “February” — no measure word, because it’s naming a specific month, not counting a quantity. 兩個月liǎng ge yuè两个月liǎng ge yuè means “two months” — with the measure word, now it’s a duration.
