In Chinese, 已已 yǐ and 早已早已 zǎoyǐ both convey a sense of “already.” However, 早已 zǎoyǐ specifically emphasizes that something has been done or occurred a long time ago or well in advance.

Already 已 yǐ 早已 zǎoyǐ Chinese grammar

已已 yǐ is the concise, formal cousin of 已經已经 yǐjīng, while 早已早已 zǎoyǐ adds the extra flavor of “a long time ago” or “well in advance.”

1 Structure

已已 yǐ

已已 yǐ is a shorter form of 已經已经 yǐjīng and is often used in formal or written language. It typically appears in more concise statements and is less common in spoken language.

He is already married.
My message has been read.
FYI · Cultural Note

The average response time for Taiwanese people is 3.3 hours, much shorter than the Western average. Under normal circumstances, if it takes more than 12 hours to get a response, some Taiwanese people might consider it too long and wonder if you don’t want to talk to them. Not responding after reading a message, or taking more than 24 hours to reply, can even lead to frustration and become a cause for arguments. So if you have Taiwanese friends or family, remember to reply at least once a day — unless you don’t intend to keep the friendship going.

My heart is already dead.
The rainy season is already over.

It specifically emphasizes that something has been done or occurred a long time ago or well in advance.

He passed away a long time ago, 10 years ago.

2 Common Mistakes

已已 yǐ (“already”) looks almost identical to two other characters — it’s easy to mix them up, especially when handwriting.

已
yǐ
“already”
top stroke doesn’t touch
己
jǐ
“self”
top stroke is open
巳
sì
zodiac “snake”
top stroke fully closed
❌
己 jǐ means “self” (as in 自己 zìjǐ), not “already” — swapping it in changes the sentence to nonsense. Look closely at the top-left stroke: 已 leaves a small gap, 己 leaves it more open, and 巳 (a zodiac character, unrelated here) closes it completely.
