有 yǒu — “To Have, There Is”

The “you sentence,” known as 有字句 yǒuzìjù有字句 yǒuzìjù in Chinese, is built around the word 有 yǒu有 yǒu. This article covers its three most basic jobs: possession (“to have”), existence at a place (“there is/are”), and introducing something without naming a location at all.

有 yǒu in Chinese

有 yǒu有 yǒu is one of the very first verbs learners meet, and it behaves a little differently from other verbs — most importantly, it’s never negated with 不 bù不 bù.

1 S + 有 yǒu + O

This simple structure expresses ownership. Since Chinese verbs don’t conjugate, it can be translated as “have,” “has,” or “had” depending on context.

我wǒ以前yǐqián有yǒu一yì隻zhī狗gǒu我wǒ以前yǐqián有yǒu一yì只zhī狗gǒu
I had a dog before.
姊姊jiějie有yǒuiPhone手機shǒujī姐姐jiějie有yǒuiPhone手机shǒujī
My sister has an iPhone.
你nǐ有yǒu500wǔbǎi塊kuài錢qián嗎ma?你nǐ有yǒu500wǔbǎi块kuài钱qián吗ma?
Do you have $500?
你nǐ有yǒu空kòng嗎ma?你nǐ有yǒu空kòng吗ma?
Do you have time? (A casual way to ask.)
一yí個ge星期xīngqí有yǒu七qī天tiān一yí个ge星期xīngqī有yǒu七qī天tiān
One week has seven days. = There are seven days in a week.
你nǐ有yǒu病bìng嗎ma?你nǐ有yǒu病bìng吗ma?
Are you sick? (= Are you crazy?)
FYI: 你有病嗎 nǐ yǒu bìng ma你有病吗 nǐ yǒu bìng ma

Have you heard a Chinese friend say 你有病嗎 nǐ yǒu bìng ma你有病吗 nǐ yǒu bìng ma or 你有事嗎 nǐ yǒu shì ma你有事吗 nǐ yǒu shì ma when you did something a little crazy? These are playful ways to express disbelief, not literal medical questions.

So if a friend decides to learn Chinese, Japanese, and Korean all at once, you could tease them with 你有病嗎 nǐ yǒu bìng ma你有病吗 nǐ yǒu bìng ma — “Are you crazy?” Don’t be offended if it’s said to you; it’s just friendly ribbing.

2 Place + 有 yǒu + O

This structure is similar to saying “there is” or “there are” in English — a location comes first, followed by 有 yǒu有 yǒu and what exists there.

我家wǒjiā有yǒu4sì個ge人rén我家wǒjiā有yǒu4sì口kǒu人rén
There are 4 members in my family.
桌zhuō上shàng有yǒu兩liǎng本běn書shū桌zhuō上shàng有yǒu两liǎng本běn书shū
There are two books on the table.
你nǐ的de學校xuéxiào有yǒu外國wàiguó學生xuéshēng嗎ma?你nǐ的de学校xuéxiào有yǒu外国wàiguó学生xuésheng吗ma?
Are there foreign students at your school?
(廁所cèsuǒ裡lǐ厕所cèsuǒ里lǐ)有yǒu人rén嗎ma?有yǒu人rén吗ma?
Is there anyone in the toilet?
Cultural Note

Some Chinese aunties really don’t like knocking on doors — they’d rather just yell 有人嗎 yǒu rén ma有人吗 yǒu rén ma through the door when they need to use the toilet!

3 有 yǒu + (Number + MW) + N

Sometimes you want to introduce the existence of something without specifying where it is at all. Here, 有 yǒu有 yǒu simply opens the sentence, and what follows describes what the thing does or is like.

有yǒu一yì天tiān有yǒu一yì天tiān
One day…
有yǒu三sān隻zhī狗gǒu有yǒu三sān只zhī狗gǒu
There are three dogs.
有yǒu一yí個ge人rén來lái找zhǎo你nǐ有yǒu一yí个ge人rén来lái找zhǎo你nǐ
Someone is coming to see you.
有yǒu天tiān你nǐ會huì知道zhīdào我wǒ的de好hǎo有yǒu天tiān你nǐ会huì知道zhīdao我wǒ的de好hǎo
One day you will know my kindness.
有yǒu人rén住zhù在zài這裡zhèlǐ嗎ma?有yǒu人rén住zhù在zài这里zhèlǐ吗ma?
Is anyone living here?
有yǒu沒méi有yǒu人rén要yào喝hē咖啡kāfēi?有yǒu没méi有yǒu人rén要yào喝hē咖啡kāfēi?
Does anyone want coffee?
有yǒu沒méi有yǒu地方dìfāng我wǒ可以kěyǐ帶dài狗gǒu去qù?有yǒu没méi有yǒu地方dìfang我wǒ可以kěyǐ带dài狗gǒu去qù?
Is there anywhere I can take my dog?
Compare: Structure 2 vs. Structure 3

有有 + N puts the focus on existence itself, while Place + 有有 puts the focus on the location.

有yǒu一yì本běn書shū在zài桌zhuō上shàng有yǒu一yì本běn书shū在zài桌zhuō上shàng — “There is a book on the table” (focus: the book exists).

桌zhuō上shàng有yǒu一yì本běn書shū桌zhuō上shàng有yǒu一yì本běn书shū — “On the table, there is a book” (focus: the table). If you plan to continue the sentence with an action on that book, this word order connects much more naturally.

4 Negation

To negate 有 yǒu有 yǒu, always use 沒 méi没 méi — never 不 bù不 bù. This applies to all three structures above.

老師lǎoshī沒有méiyǒu男朋友nánpéngyǒu老师lǎoshī没有méiyǒu男朋友nánpéngyou
The teacher does not have a boyfriend.
咖啡店kāfēidiàn沒有méiyǒu人rén咖啡店kāfēidiàn没有méiyǒu人rén
No one is in the cafe.
沒有méiyǒu人rén要yào跟gēn你nǐ去qù日本rìběn没有méiyǒu人rén要yào跟gēn你nǐ去qù日本rìběn
No one wants to go to Japan with you.
沒有méiyǒu學生xuéshēng喜歡xǐhuān你nǐ没有méiyǒu学生xuésheng喜欢xǐhuan你nǐ
No students like you.
Short Form

沒有 méiyǒu没有 méiyǒu can be shortened to just 沒 méi没 méi with no change in meaning, in both speech and writing.

我wǒ沒méi錢qián、沒méi工作gōngzuò、沒méi男朋友nánpéngyǒu、沒méi未來wèilái我wǒ没méi钱qián、没méi工作gōngzuò、没méi男朋友nánpéngyou、没méi未来wèilái — “I have no money, no job, no boyfriend, no future.”

5 Common Mistakes

The single most important rule: never negate 有 yǒu有 yǒu with 不 bù不 bù.

❌
他tā不bù有yǒu中文zhōngwén書shū他tā不bù有yǒu中文zhōngwén书shū
✅
他tā沒有méiyǒu中文zhōngwén書shū他tā没有méiyǒu中文zhōngwén书shū
He does not have Chinese books. 有 yǒu有 yǒu is one of the very few verbs that is never negated with 不 bù不 bù — always use 沒 méi没 méi instead.
