Grammar · HSK 1
Both patterns turn a plain adjective into an exclamation — no “!” needed in the grammar itself, the words do the work.
1 太 tài + Adj + 了 le — “So…!” / “Too…!”
This is the most common exclamatory pattern. 太太 tài goes before the adjective, and the sentence closes with 了了 le — without it, the sentence feels unfinished.
這個太貴了这个太贵了
This is too expensive!
天氣太熱了天气太热了
The weather is too hot!
你太好了你太好了
You’re so nice!
Tiffany的中文課太好玩了的中文课太好玩了
Tiffany’s Chinese class is too fun!
2 真 zhēn + Adj — “Really…!”
真 zhēn (“really, truly”) sits right before the adjective. It sounds like a genuine, straightforward reaction — no 了 needed.
你真聰明你真聪明
You’re really smart!
這個菜真好吃这个菜真好吃
This dish is really delicious!
今天真冷今天真冷
Today is really cold!
💡 FYI
太太 tài…了了 le often carries a sense of “more than expected” — it can be a complaint (too expensive!) or strong praise (so nice!) depending on the adjective. 真真 zhēn is more neutral — just a genuine “really.”
3 Common Mistakes
❌
這個太貴这个太贵
✅
這個太貴了这个太贵了
Without the final 了了 le, a 太…了 sentence sounds cut off — the 了 is what makes it land as an exclamation.
