Reading Passage

David is a traveler from the United States, and this is his first trip to Taiwan. Since he was young, he has been very interested in Chinese culture, especially tea culture. On this trip to Taiwan, he decided to find a chance to personally experience the traditional tea ceremony and see what’s really special about drinking tea.
One afternoon, David walked into a teahouse located on an old street. The atmosphere inside was very quiet, with several pieces of calligraphy hanging on the walls, and the air carried a faint scent of tea. The tea master smiled and invited him to sit down, preparing to demonstrate a complete tea ceremony for him.
The tea master first warmed the cups with hot water, then placed the tea leaves into a small teapot and slowly brewed it. She said that the water temperature, timing, and amount of tea leaves used are all very particular — even a slight difference can completely change the taste of the tea. David watched intently, feeling that every movement was full of ritual.
After the tea was brewed, the tea master asked David to smell the aroma first, then slowly taste it. He found that the fragrance of this cup of tea was much richer than he had imagined, and there was a hint of sweetness after swallowing. He couldn’t help asking why drinking tea takes so much time. The tea master smiled and replied, “Drinking tea requires patience — you can’t rush it.”
Over the next hour, David tasted several different types of tea along with the tea master. He gradually came to understand that the tea ceremony isn’t just about drinking tea — it’s a way of life: slowing down, focusing on the present moment, and sharing this quiet time with the people around you.
As he left the teahouse, David felt deeply moved. He felt that this tradition, though simple, contained profound wisdom. He decided that after returning home, he would also try to set aside a little time in his busy life to brew himself a cup of tea, relearning the ability to slow down.
