Culture Note

  • Many attractions in mainland China require real-name registration with a passport at entry, even for free sites; Taiwan generally doesn’t require this for general sightseeing.
  • Popular sites in mainland China often require advance online booking, even for free entry, due to daily visitor caps — walk-up tickets aren’t always guaranteed. Book a day or two ahead when you can.
  • Tipping tour guides isn’t customary in either Taiwan or mainland China, though guides on small private tours sometimes appreciate a little extra.
  • Selfie sticks and drones are restricted at many indoor attractions and museums — worth checking the signage or asking staff before you set up.
