The Secret of the Cake

Jiajia and Ruan’an have been good friends since they were little. Last month, Jiajia got married, and her husband Andrew is American.

Many relatives and friends came to the wedding, and the atmosphere was very lively. There was a three-tier cake at the wedding. On top of it were little figures of the bride and groom. It was very beautiful and cute.

However, they did not finish the whole cake. After the wedding, Andrew wrapped the top layer of the cake and put it in the freezer. When Ruan’an saw it, she thought it was strange and asked, “Why are you freezing the cake?”

Andrew said that this was an American tradition. Married couples freeze the top layer of their wedding cake and eat it together again on their first anniversary. Ruan’an thought it was interesting after hearing this, but she was still a little worried. She asked, “Is a cake that has been frozen for a year really still good to eat?”

Jiajia said that many people think a cake frozen for a year does not taste as good as a fresh one. However, people still want to eat it because it is not only about eating cake; it is also a way to remember the happiness of their wedding day. Nowadays, some people choose to ask the bakery to make another small cake that looks the same for their first anniversary.

A year passed quickly. On their first anniversary, Jiajia and Andrew took the cake out of the freezer and ate a small piece together. Jiajia said that it still tasted pretty good. Andrew smiled and said, “No matter whether the cake tastes good or not, the most important thing is that we are still together.” Jiajia felt very happy after hearing that.

Later, Jiajia told Ruan’an about this. Ruan’an smiled and said, “That’s really romantic. If I get married in the future, I want to try it too. But I might ask the bakery to make a new one, because I’m a little afraid that the cake might go bad.”

OneDotDot Chinese

Whenever I ask foreigners, "Do you speak Chinese?" they often reply, "a little bit" (yì diǎn diǎn). That inspired me to create this website and translate "yì diǎn diǎn" into the quirky and fun "One Dot Dot."

It’s also a reminder that learning Chinese is a journey, and progress happens one step at a time. By learning just a little bit every day, you’ll go far!
