“Because” in Chinese is 因為因为yīnwèi, and “so” is 所以 suǒyǐ. Put them together and you get 因為因为…所以…, the most common way to link a reason with its result.
一 The Basic Pattern
因為因为yīnwèi introduces the reason, and 所以 suǒyǐ introduces the result. In English you use just one of them (“because” or “so”), but in Chinese they usually appear together. Chinese also likes to put the reason first and the result second.
The weather’s nice today, so I’m planning to have a picnic in the park.
I didn’t go to work yesterday because I had a headache.
Everyone said this was really good, so I bought it.
You didn’t come yesterday, so I gave the tickets away.
The subject can go before 因為因为 too: 我因為頭很痛,所以昨天沒去上班我因为头很痛,所以昨天没去上班. When the subject is the same in both halves, you don’t need to repeat it after 所以.
二 Can I Use Just 因為因为 or 所以?
Yes! You can use just one of them. It sounds more casual, and it’s very common when chatting with friends.
I’m so hungry because I haven’t had breakfast yet today.
With only 因為因为yīnwèi, the result can come first, just like in English.
I won’t be home for dinner today, because my boss suddenly said we have a meeting.
He was really angry yesterday because his wallet went missing.
It’s raining, so is today’s walk cancelled?
I was really tired yesterday, so I went to bed early.
You’re not going, so we’ll just buy five tickets.
A typhoon is coming! So no work tomorrow!
Typhoon day off!Did you know Taiwan has typhoon days off? When a typhoon is on its way and could make getting around dangerous, local governments announce a special day off. Schools and many offices close, and everyone is told to stay safe indoors until the storm passes.
But let’s be real: Taiwanese people always find a way to make the most of their time. Instead of staying cooped up at home, lots of people head to the movies or the department store. It’s our little secret, don’t tell anyone! 😉
三 Common Mistakes
所以 suǒyǐ is a conjunction, so it goes at the start of the result, before the subject.
Careful which word you pick! With 因為因为yīnwèi, this says “I got sick because I didn’t go to class.” Getting sick is the reason, so the result needs 所以 suǒyǐ.
所以 suǒyǐ always comes with the result in the second half. If you want the result first, drop
