Reduplication of Verbs 1 — V一V, V了V & V一下

Repeating a verb in Chinese softens it. It makes an action sound brief, casual, or like a quick try. You’ll hear it all the time in spoken Mandarin.

Reduplication of Verbs in Chinese

There are three common forms: V(一 yī)V for requests and casual actions, V了 le V for a brief action that already happened, and V一下 yíxià for “just a moment / give it a quick try.”

1Structure

V (一 yī) V

This makes your tone more casual and friendly, especially in a request or command, and suggests the action is just an attempt or easy to do.

你nǐ做zuò的de菜cài真zhēn好吃hǎochī，请qǐng教jiāo教jiao我wǒ
The dishes you make are delicious! Please teach me.
听说tīngshuō夜市yèshì有yǒu很hěn多duō好吃hǎochī的de，你nǐ可以kěyǐ带dài我wǒ去qù看kàn一yí看kàn吗ma？
I heard there’s a lot of good food at the night market. Can you take me to have a look?
想xiǎng不bù想xiǎng到dào北京Běijīng去qù玩wán一yì玩wán？
Do you want to go to Beijing for a visit?
好久hǎojiǔ不bú见jiàn，快kuài说shuō说shuo你nǐ最近zuìjìn过guò得de怎么样zěnmeyàng了le
Long time no see! Tell me how you’ve been.
我wǒ需要xūyào一点儿yìdiǎnr时间shíjiān想xiǎng一yì想xiǎng
I need some time to think.
我wǒ周末zhōumò常常chángcháng在zài家jiā看kàn看kan电视diànshì、上shàng上shang网wǎng
On weekends I often stay home, watching some TV and going online. (done casually)
📌 Tone of the second verb

When there’s no 一 yī in the middle, mainland China reads the second verb in the neutral tone, but Taiwan keeps its full tone. Switch between Traditional and Simplified to see the difference in the pinyin:

看kàn看kan
TW kànkàn · CN kànkan

V 了 le V

Used for an action that was done briefly in the past.

我wǒ上次shàngcì试shì了le试shì那nà双shuāng鞋xié，很hěn舒服shūfu
I tried on those shoes last time, and they’re very comfortable.
她tā想xiǎng了le想xiǎng，还是háishì决定juédìng不bù买mǎi了le
She thought about it, but decided not to buy it in the end.
面试miànshì的de时间shíjiān太tài短duǎn，我wǒ只zhǐ说shuō了le说shuō我wǒ的de经验jīngyàn，还hái没méi说shuō想法xiǎngfǎ
The interview was too short. I only briefly talked about my experience and didn’t get to my ideas.
最近zuìjìn公司gōngsī太tài忙máng，她tā昨天zuótiān吃chī了le吃chī饭fàn就jiù去qù睡shuì了le
Work has been crazy lately. Yesterday she just grabbed a quick dinner and went to bed.
你nǐ要yào开始kāishǐ打dǎ高尔夫gāo’ěrfū？是shì不bú是shì上次shàngcì打dǎ了le打dǎ有yǒu兴趣xìngqù了le？
You’re starting golf? Did you get interested after trying it last time?
💡 FYI

To turn a V了V sentence into a question, use 是不是 shì bú shì, as in the golf example above.

V + 一下 yíxià

Shows the action is brief or tentative: “just for a moment,” “give it a quick try.”

你nǐ可以kěyǐ帮bāng我wǒ翻译fānyì一下yíxià吗ma？
Could you help me translate this?
我wǒ吃chī一下yíxià，你nǐ盐yán放fàng得de太tài多duō了le
Let me taste it. You put in too much salt.
我wǒ不bú会huì喝hē太tài多duō，喝hē一下yíxià就jiù回家huíjiā
I won’t drink too much. I’ll just have a little and go home.
请qǐng你nǐ写xiě一下yíxià你nǐ的de名字míngzi
Please write down your name.
快kuài说shuō一下yíxià，发生fāshēng什么shénme事shì了le
Quick, tell me, what happened?

2Common Mistakes

❌ 我wǒ昨天zuótiān看kàn一yí看kàn你nǐ的de报告bàogào
✅ 我wǒ昨天zuótiān看kàn了le看kàn你nǐ的de报告bàogào
For a brief action that already happened, use V了V, not V一V.
❌ 请qǐng你nǐ很hěn看kàn看kan
✅ 请qǐng你nǐ看kàn看kan
A reduplicated verb is already softened, so it doesn’t take degree words like 很 hěn.
