Telecom in Taiwan

Some of the largest mobile providers in Taiwan are Chunghwa (also spelled Zhonghua), Taiwan Mobile , and Far Eastone.

  1. Chung Hwa Telecom (中華電信zhōnghuá diànxìn) is often abbreviated CHT.
Highly recommend it, if you plan on traveling to less populated cities or mountains around Taiwan.
  2. Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大táiwān dàgēdà)
  3. Far Eastone (遠傳yuǎnchuán)

Strongly recommend you buy your SIM card at the airport. Staff who work in an airport can help you in English, but staff in the city may not.

A mobile phone contract is usually 1-2 years and can include a deposit in Taiwan. Sometimes they offer month-to-month plans, but this is usually at the expense of the subsidy of the phone.

Small tips: If you bring a Taiwanese to the telecom, you probably can get a better choice. The latest contract is usually more expensive than the older one. If your Taiwanese friend can tell the staff that you want the exactly same option as your friend, you can save some money.

Telecom in China

  1. China Mobile (中国移动通信 zhōngguó yídòng tōngxìn)
Highly recommend it, if you plan on traveling to both northern and southern China.
  2. China Unicom (中国联通 zhōngguó liántōng):
Highly recommend it, if you plan on traveling to northern China.
  3. China Telecom (中国电信 zhōngguó diànxìn)
Highly recommend it, if you plan on traveling to southern China.

If you want to top up your SIM card, you can always go to one of the thousands of stores that you will find in China with the logo of your operator and a top-up card. The top-up card contains instructions on how to use it in both Chinese and English.

Small tips: Internet restrictions exist in China, so it is better to purchase a VPN before you travel.

OneDotDot Chinese

Whenever I ask foreigners, "Do you speak Chinese?" they often reply, "a little bit" (yì diǎn diǎn). That inspired me to create this website and translate "yì diǎn diǎn" into the quirky and fun "One Dot Dot."

It’s also a reminder that learning Chinese is a journey, and progress happens one step at a time. By learning just a little bit every day, you’ll go far!
