方向補語方向补语 fāngxiàng bǔyǔ — Extension 1

Seven extended senses of 上上 shàng, plus 過过 guò crossing a point — physical direction words stretched into new, non-directional meanings.

方向補語 Direction Complement Extension

This pulls together the more advanced senses of the direction complements you’ve already met — starting with the seven extended jobs 上上 shàng can do beyond literal “up,” then 過过 guò crossing a point on its own.

1 V + 上上 shàng

上上 shàng has seven common extended uses. Here they are, one at a time.

1. Get Closer To

Catching up — closing the gap until you’re right there with them.

追上 zhuī shàng catching up
狗gǒu追zhuī上shàng了le小偷xiǎotōu狗gǒu追zhuī上shàng了le小偷xiǎotōu
The dog caught up with the thief.
小心xiǎoxīn跟gēn上shàng我wǒ小心xiǎoxīn跟gēn上shàng我wǒ
Careful, keep up with me!
我wǒ終於zhōngyú趕gǎn上shàng了le末班車mòbānchē我wǒ终于zhōngyú赶gǎn上shàng了le末班车mòbānchē
I finally made it in time for the last bus.

2. From Open to Closed

English has “close/shut” for all of these — Chinese uses a different verb depending on what’s closing, with 上上 shàng marking that it’s now shut.

關上 guān shàng closing something shut
閉bì上shàng眼睛yǎnjīng闭bì上shàng眼睛yǎnjīng
Close your eyes.
關guān上shàng門mén关guān上shàng门mén
Close the door.
闔hé上shàng書shū阖hé上shàng书shū
Close the book.

3. Make Something Exist Somewhere

寫xiě上shàng你nǐ的de名字míngzi写xiě上shàng你nǐ的de名字míngzi
Write down your name.
我wǒ在zài牆qiáng上shàng掛guà上shàng了le小狗xiǎogǒu的de照片zhàopiàn我wǒ在zài墙qiáng上shàng挂guà上shàng了le小狗xiǎogǒu的de照片zhàopiàn
I hung a picture of the puppy on the wall.
她tā打算dǎsuàn在zài台北Táiběi住zhù上shàng幾jǐ天tiān她tā打算dǎsuàn在zài台北Táiběi住zhù上shàng几jǐ天tiān
She plans to stay in Taipei for a few days.

4. Achieve a Difficult Goal

當上 dāng shàng achieving a hard-won goal
他tā終於zhōngyú當dāng上shàng醫師yīshī了le他tā终于zhōngyú当dāng上shàng医师yīshī了le
He finally became a doctor.
我wǒ考kǎo上shàng耶魯大學Yélǔ dàxué了le我wǒ考kǎo上shàng耶鲁大学Yélǔ dàxué了le
I got into Yale University.
你nǐ一定yídìng能néng申請shēnqǐng上shàng理想lǐxiǎng的de工作gōngzuò你nǐ一定yídìng能néng申请shēnqǐng上shàng理想lǐxiǎng的de工作gōngzuò
You’ll definitely land your dream job.

5. “Up To; As Many As”

你nǐ的de收入shōurù比bǐ我wǒ的de多duō上shàng1000美金měijīn吧ba你nǐ的de收入shōurù比bǐ我wǒ的de多duō上shàng1000美金měijīn吧ba
Your income is $1000 more than mine, right?
他tā比bǐ我wǒ高gāo上shàng4、5公分gōngfēn他tā比bǐ我wǒ高gāo上shàng4、5公分gōngfēn
He’s 4 or 5 cm taller than me.
我wǒ的de中文Zhōngwén比bǐ你nǐ好hǎo上shàng100倍bèi我wǒ的de中文Zhōngwén比bǐ你nǐ好hǎo上shàng100倍bèi
My Chinese is a hundred times better than yours.

6. Wearing; Putting On

穿戴上 chuāndài shàng putting something on
穿chuān上shàng衣服yīfú穿chuān上shàng衣服yīfú
Put on your clothes.
戴dài上shàng項鍊xiàngliàn戴dài上shàng项链xiàngliàn
Put on the necklace.
繫jì上shàng領帶lǐngdài系jì上shàng领带lǐngdài
Tie up the tie.

7. Add

算suàn上shàng我wǒ吧ba!算suàn上shàng我wǒ吧ba!
Count me in!
加jiā上shàng一點yìdiǎn糖táng加jiā上shàng一点yìdiǎn糖táng
Add a little sugar.
別bié忘wàng了le算suàn上shàng運費yùnfèi别bié忘wàng了le算suàn上shàng运费yùnfèi
Don’t forget to include the shipping fee.

2 V + 過过 guò — Crossing a Point

Without 來来 lái or 去去 qù, 過过 guò marks something passing through, across, or beyond a point — an object handed over, a body part turning, or a target overshot.

1. Handing Something Over

她tā從cóng郵差yóuchāi手shǒu中zhōng接jiē過guò了le那nà封fēng信xìn她tā从cóng邮差yóuchāi手shǒu中zhōng接jiē过guò了le那nà封fēng信xìn
She took the letter from the mailman’s hand.
他tā把bǎ球qiú傳chuán過來guòlái了le他tā把bǎ球qiú传chuán过来guòlái了le
He passed the ball over.

2. A Body Part Turns

聽到tīngdào有yǒu人rén叫jiào她tā,她tā轉zhuǎn過guò頭tóu看kàn了le一yì眼yǎn听到tīngdào有yǒu人rén叫jiào她tā,她tā转zhuǎn过guò头tóu看kàn了le一yì眼yǎn
Hearing someone call her, she turned her head to look.
他tā翻fān過guò身shēn繼續jìxù睡shuì他tā翻fān过guò身shēn继续jìxù睡shuì
He rolled over and kept sleeping.

3. Overshooting the Right Point

Here 過过 guò stands alone with no 來来 lái or 去去 qù — the action went past where it should have stopped.

我wǒ今天jīntiān睡shuì過guò頭tóu了le,上班shàngbān遲到chídào了le我wǒ今天jīntiān睡shuì过guò头tóu了le,上班shàngbān迟到chídào了le
I overslept today and was late for work.
我wǒ在zài地鐵dìtiě上shàng睡shuì著zháo了le,坐zuò過guò了le站zhàn我wǒ在zài地铁dìtiě上shàng睡shuì着zháo了le,坐zuò过guò了le站zhàn
I fell asleep on the subway and missed my stop.
