屢屢 lǚlǚ屡屡 lǚlǚ & 頻 pín频 pín — “Repeatedly”

Both are formal words for “repeatedly,” but they belong to different registers. 屢屢 lǚlǚ屡屡 lǚlǚ is an everyday-formal cousin of 屢次 lǚcì屡次 lǚcì — a pattern noticed over several occasions, good or bad. 頻 pín频 pín is more clipped and journalistic, welded tightly onto a two-character verb (頻傳 pínchuán频传 pínchuán, 頻出 pínchū频出 pínchū), and its doubled form 頻頻 pínpín频频 pínpín paints a quick, frequent physical action, like nodding or glancing.

屢屢 lǚlǚ 頻 pín Chinese Grammar

屢屢 lǚlǚ屡屡 lǚlǚ always sits right before a verb phrase, much like 屢次 lǚcì屡次 lǚcì — but it doesn’t lean negative the way 屢次 lǚcì屡次 lǚcì does; it’s equally at home with awards and achievements as it is with problems. 頻 pín频 pín almost never stands alone — it’s either fused into a noun-subject headline (N + 頻频 + V), or doubled up as 頻頻 pínpín频频 pínpín to describe someone repeating a small physical action in quick succession.

1 Structure

S + 屢屢 lǚlǚ屡屡 lǚlǚ + VP

Sits right before the verb phrase, describing something that has happened again and again over time. Unlike 屢次 lǚcì屡次 lǚcì, the tone isn’t necessarily negative — 屢屢 lǚlǚ屡屡 lǚlǚ works just as naturally for repeated wins as it does for repeated setbacks.

N + 頻 pín频 pín + V

A clipped, journalistic pattern: a noun subject followed directly by 頻 pín频 pín and a single-character verb, the two fused into one tight two-syllable unit — 頻傳 pínchuán频传 pínchuán (“frequently reported”), 頻出 pínchū频出 pínchū (“frequently emerge”), 頻現 pínxiàn频现 pínxiàn (“frequently surface”). Common in news headlines and formal reports.

S + 頻頻 pínpín频频 pínpín + V

The doubled form sits before an ordinary verb, describing a small physical action repeated quickly and frequently — nodding, glancing, looking back, raising a glass. It reads less like a headline and more like a moment being observed.

他tā頻頻pínpín點頭diǎntóu,表示biǎoshì完全wánquán贊同zàntóng他tā频频pínpín点头diǎntóu,表示biǎoshì完全wánquán赞同zàntóng

Bonus: 捷報頻傳 jiébào pínchuán捷报频传 jiébào pínchuán

This four-character collocation pairs 捷報 jiébào捷报 jiébào (“news of victory”) with 頻傳 pínchuán频传 pínchuán (“frequently reported”) — “victory news keeps coming in,” describing an unbroken string of good results or successes.

這次zhècì比賽bǐsài,我國wǒguó選手xuǎnshǒu捷報頻傳jiébàopínchuán,士氣shìqì大振dàzhèn这次zhècì比赛bǐsài,我国wǒguó选手xuǎnshǒu捷报频传jiébàopínchuán,士气shìqì大振dàzhèn

2 Common Mistakes

The two get confused because they’re both formal “repeatedly” words — but their register and binding are very different.

❌
他tā頻pín遲到chídào,老闆lǎobǎn很hěn生氣shēngqì他tā频pín迟到chídào,老板lǎobǎn很hěn生气shēngqì
✅
他tā屢屢lǚlǚ遲到chídào,老闆lǎobǎn很hěn生氣shēngqì他tā屡屡lǚlǚ迟到chídào,老板lǎobǎn很hěn生气shēngqì
頻 pín频 pín is a clipped, journalistic adverb that fuses onto a single-character verb after a noun subject (like 意外頻傳意外频传) — it doesn’t sit naturally in front of a personal pronoun and an ordinary predicate. 屢屢 lǚlǚ屡屡 lǚlǚ is the natural choice for describing someone’s repeated behaviour in a normal sentence.
❌
這場zhè chǎng比賽bǐsài精彩jīngcǎi屢屢lǚlǚ这场zhè chǎng比赛bǐsài精彩jīngcǎi屡屡lǚlǚ

屢屢 lǚlǚ屡屡 lǚlǚ must be followed by a verb phrase — unlike 連連 liánlián连连 liánlián, it can’t stand alone as a predicate directly after a noun.
