驟然 zòurán骤然 zhòurán — “Suddenly”

驟然 zòurán骤然 zhòurán is a literary, high-register word for “suddenly” — reserved for formal writing, news reports, and dramatic narration. It describes an abrupt, often intense shift, and rarely shows up in everyday conversation.

骤然 zhòurán Chinese Grammar

Where 忽然 hūrán忽然 hūrán and 突然 tūrán突然 tūrán handle everyday surprises, 驟然 zòurán骤然 zhòurán is reserved for weightier moments — a market crash, a sudden storm, a life-altering turn of events. It’s an adverb only, and works purely in written or formal spoken register.

2 Common Mistakes

The grammar isn’t the trap here — the register is. 驟然 zòurán骤然 zhòurán sounds overblown when used for something small and mundane.

驟然 zòurán骤然 zhòurán belongs to formal, written, or dramatic contexts — markets, weather systems, historical events. Using it for a small daily realization sounds theatrical and out of place; 突然 tūrán突然 tūrán or 忽然 hūrán忽然 hūrán is the natural, everyday choice.
