就 · 才 — 近義詞辨析
Similar words

就jiù · 才cái

Two tiny words that quietly carry a speaker’s sense of timing, expectation, and attitude — and change the whole feel of a sentence.

就jiù and 才cái can each show up in several completely different grammar patterns, and in almost every one of them they sit on opposite ends of the same idea — earlier vs. later, only reason vs. not the only reason, easy vs. hard. This page walks through 7 common comparisons.

Time + 就/才

Earlier than expected vs. Later than expected
expected time 就 earlier 才 later
Same event, same point in time — whether the speaker says 就 or 才 depends on whether that time feels earlier or later than what they expected.
就jiù

Earlier than expected. If the action already happened, 了 is often added at the end.

才cái

Later than expected.
