How 热心 (rèxīn, “warm-hearted”) are Taiwanese people? Here is a true story. In July 2016, an international crime group called “Cobalt,” which had already stolen more than NT$30 billion from banks around the world, chose Taiwan as its next target. Its hackers took control of First Bank ATMs, and the cash machines started giving out money by themselves. This became known as the 第一银行ATM跨国盗领案 (Dì-yī Yínháng ATM kuàguó dàolǐng àn), or the 一银盗领案 (Yì-yín dàolǐng àn) for short.
But the gang had not counted on Taiwan’s vigilant and helpful citizens. People noticed suspicious behavior and called in tips, the media helped look for the suspects, and the police used the clues to crack the case in just seven days. Most of the stolen money was recovered, and countries hit by the same gang asked Taiwan for help. It shows what 热心 (rèxīn) can do!
