注音符號注音符号Zhuyin Guide

Zhuyin (ㄅㄆㄇㄈ), also called Bopomofo, is the phonetic alphabet children in Taiwan use to learn Mandarin. It has just 37 symbols and 5 tone marks. This is a listening-first guide to what each symbol sounds like, how symbols stack into syllables, and how every one of them maps to Hanyu Pinyin.

How it worksInitialsFinalsCombinationsTonesWordsQuiz

How Zhuyin works

Every syllable is built in the same order: an optional initial (a consonant), an optional medial (ㄧ, ㄨ or ㄩ), a final (a vowel or nasal ending), and a tone mark.

21initials, the consonant symbols ㄅ to ㄙ
16finals, from ㄧ to ㄦ, including the three medials
5tone marks, written after the syllable (the neutral dot goes first)
黃黄 = ㄏ + ㄨ + ㄤ + ˊinitial ㄏ (h) + medial ㄨ (u) + final ㄤ (ang) + second-tone mark ˊ, which reads huáng.
Seven initials, ㄓ ㄔ ㄕ ㄖ ㄗ ㄘ ㄙ, can stand alone as a whole syllable. Pinyin spells them zhi, chi, shi, ri, zi, ci, si. The first tone has no mark at all.

The 21 initials

Press the play button to hear an example word (your browser’s Mandarin voice reads it). For how to shape each sound, see the matching Hanyu Pinyin lessons on this site, because the sounds are identical.

The 16 finals

ㄝ is rarely written alone. You will mostly see it inside ㄧㄝ (ie) and ㄩㄝ (üe), as in 謝 ㄒㄧㄝˋ and 學 ㄒㄩㄝˊ.

Putting finals together

Add a medial in front of another final to make a new one. Pinyin spelling is shown as after a consonant / on its own.

ㄧ
ㄧㄚia / yaㄧㄝie / yeㄧㄠiao / yaoㄧㄡiu / youㄧㄢian / yanㄧㄣin / yinㄧㄤiang / yangㄧㄥing / ying
ㄨ

ㄩ
ㄩㄝüe / yueㄩㄢüan / yuanㄩㄣün / yunㄩㄥiong / yong
Pinyin shortens a few of these after a consonant: ㄧㄡ is written iu, ㄨㄟ is ui, ㄨㄣ is un. After j, q, x the two dots of ü disappear, so ㄐㄩㄝ is written jue.

Tone marks

Zhuyin marks tones with small symbols that follow the syllable. The first tone is unmarked, and the neutral-tone dot is written before the syllable.

1st tone—媽妈ㄇㄚmā
2nd toneˊ麻ㄇㄚˊmá
3rd toneˇ馬马ㄇㄚˇmǎ
4th toneˋ罵骂ㄇㄚˋmà
Neutral tone˙嗎吗˙ㄇㄚma
