Nature, Weather and Geography Words in Chinese

自然、天氣與地理詞彙自然、天气与地理词汇 zìrán, tiānqì yǔ dìlǐ cíhuì

Taiwan’s winter is usually around 8–12 degrees, which doesn’t sound that cold, right? But many people from countries with snow arrive in Taiwan and say the winter is freezing. That’s because Taiwan’s cold is a damp cold. Add the rain, and you almost always get at least a little wet when you go outside. That wet chill that seeps into your bones is really hard to bear.

On top of that, most places in Taiwan have no central heating (暖氣暖气 nuǎnqì), so the cold never lets up, 24 hours a day. In Europe or Japan, you step indoors and it’s so warm you take your coat off. In Taiwan, you may have to stay in your down jacket the whole time, even while sleeping or watching TV at home, curled up in a ball.

風景 (fēngjǐng), 景色 (jǐngsè) and 美景 (měijǐng) — what’s the difference?

All three are “scenery,” but with a different feel. 風景风景 (fēngjǐng) is the general word for a landscape, 景色 (jǐngsè) is the view you see in front of you right now, and 美景 (měijǐng) is specifically beautiful scenery.

農村农村 (nóngcūn) vs 鄉下乡下 (xiāngxià)

農村 (nóngcūn) is the standard word for “countryside” in mainland China. In everyday Taiwanese speech, people more often say 鄉下乡下 (xiāngxià) instead.
