Culture Note

  • Many mainland Chinese hotels ask for a cash or card deposit (押金) at check-in, refunded when you check out.
  • In Taiwan, 飯店 almost always means “hotel” — but in mainland China, 饭店 often means “restaurant.” Look for 酒店 instead when hotel-hunting there.
  • Tipping housekeeping isn’t expected in either Taiwan or mainland China.
  • Budget hotels in mainland China sometimes limit hot water to certain hours — worth asking at check-in if you’re an early or late showerer.
