The Moon Represents My Heart

This is one of the most recognizable Mandarin songs of all time. It was first recorded by Chen Fen-lan in 1973, but it was Teresa Teng’s 1977 recording that turned it into a classic — a song that later became one of the first pieces of foreign pop music to spread widely across mainland China after the country opened up in the late 1970s.

The lyrics use the moon as a simple, steady image for a love that doesn’t waver — which is probably part of why it’s stayed so universally loved, covered by singers across generations and used in film and television again and again.
