class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>Celebrated across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Chinese communities worldwide, <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u7aef\u5348\u7bc0<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u7aef\u5348\u8282<\/span> is one of the three biggest festivals on the Chinese calendar, alongside <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u904e\u5e74<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u8fc7\u5e74<\/span> and the Mid-Autumn Festival. In English it&#8217;s usually called the <strong>Dragon Boat Festival<\/strong>, after its signature event, though you&#8217;ll also see it romanized as <em>Duanwu<\/em> or, in Cantonese, <em>Tuen Ng<\/em>.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"callout\">\n        <p>In 2009, <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u7aef\u5348\u7bc0<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u7aef\u5348\u8282<\/span> became the <strong>first Chinese holiday added to UNESCO&#8217;s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity<\/strong> \u2014 official global recognition for a tradition that&#8217;s well over a thousand years old.<\/p>\n        <p>Interestingly, it&#8217;s not unique to China: South Korea&#8217;s <em>Gangneung Danoje Festival<\/em>, held around the same date, was inscribed by UNESCO a few years earlier \u2014 leading to some good-natured (and some not-so-good-natured) cross-strait and cross-border debate about whose version came first.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/section>\n\n    <section class=\"block\" id=\"why\">\n      <div class=\"kicker\">The one thing that ties it all together<\/div>\n      <h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_so_many_%E2%80%9Cprotective%E2%80%9D_customs\"><\/span>Why so many &#8220;protective&#8221; customs?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>Almost every custom below exists for the same underlying reason: in the old lunar calendar, the fifth month was traditionally known as <span class=\"term\"><span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u60e1\u6708<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u6076\u6708<\/span> \u00e8yu\u00e8<\/span>, the &#8220;poison month.&#8221; Summer heat was setting in, disease spread faster, and snakes, scorpions, and insects were all coming out of hiding \u2014 collectively known as the <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u4e94\u6bd2<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u4e94\u6bd2<\/span> w\u01d4d\u00fa, the &#8220;Five Poisons&#8221; (centipede, snake, scorpion, toad, and gecko).<\/p>\n      <p>So rather than a festival of pure celebration, <span class=\"lang-zh-TW\">\u7aef\u5348\u7bc0<\/span><span class=\"lang-zh-CN\">\u7aef\u5348\u8282<\/span> grew into something closer to an ancient public health day \u2014 a cluster of folk remedies for staying safe through the most dangerous stretch of the year.
